Hi guys,

I've just noticed this morning that there seems to be some brown stuff on my dipstick.....

I only bought this car about a month ago and I checked the dipstick and everything was ok......I also checked it about two weeks ago and there wasn't any sign of this brown stuff then....

Does anyone know what this could be i thought it might be when i push the dipstick down the hole whether it has anything to do with that but i'm not sure.... It's just a brown past the rest of the oil seems fine along the dipstick but just a little amount at the bottom..... When i wipe it over a cloth nothing seems to be out of the ordinary but i'm not too sure what it is......

Does anyone have any ideas......

thanks

Hello and welcome, this is not easy to answer, unless a flushing agent was used when the oil was changed last and there is still some sludge in the sump

Have you looked at the oil cap to see if theres any brown stuff on that? do you do short trips in the car?

Cheers guys for the quick reply.....I don't do short journey's if anything i've done quite a few that have been long journey's like a 200 hundred mile round trip.....i seemed to notice it after that.....

On a daily basis i'm probably doing 25 miles to my work but i wouldn't say that's a short trip....

And no the oil cap looks perfectly clean....

Also it hasn't been serviced since last year january and plus i think the person who owned it before me didn't do many miles....

It could be condensation inside the engine causing that. condensation sometimes mixed with oil creates that residue. I have had that in my past cars where i always use to see small amount of brown foam kind of material in the dipstick from time to time and sometimes under the oil cap as well.

I would clean the dipstick and keep it on monitor to see if it comes back. I dont think its anything too serious.

Keep your fingers cross though

Also probably worth checking that the breather pipes are clear, although my E240 came with good history both my rocker covers breathers were blocked ..goes to prove that the servicing is only as good as the mechanic that does it I suppose !!

Well its due an oil change then. They can check the condition of the old oil when the do it too, so any issues can be picked up at the same time.
If you're in any doubt as to the condition of the oil you should always change it. That said, if your car has an assyst system it will be monitoring it anyway.
