Hello
Im posting a copy of a posting from another forum that someone here may be able to help

thanks alot in advance

Problem1. My beloved 1996 280E Mercedes has developed a small problem. The cruise control gizmo has packed in. There I was belting along at 70mph and the car suddenly slowed. d**n I'll have to use my right foot again! " I thought I had retired it a while back" I canceled it and reset it with no success. Came home the last 130 miles having to use the old right foot, came in lifted the Bible "Haynes" to be hit with ELECTRONICS!! What happened to the good days when all you needed was a Battery 6 or 12 volts I'm not bothered which! A generator/Alternator and a hand full of ceramic fuses/relays.
According to haynes behind the dash I'll find the Cruise control ECU. Once I read that I didn't need to read anymore. It goes right over my head.
Could anyone out there help an ageing man with a tired right foot.

cruise control

Before getting too technical check you tyre pressures and for uneven tyre wear this can upset the cruise control.

I have also heard that some bulb failures can have an effect so check your lights also

Lots of info on US sites

Hope this helps

if one tyre was low, the sensors would see one wheel turing faster than the rest - thus sees a slip situation - thus kills the cruise..

would have to be prety bad i would have thoguht.

mine packed up once - a re-start fixed it - never happened since.

THanks alot to everyone for the replies and as it turned out it was brake pads being low(which ties in with the incorrect tyre pressure principle in that cruise control working outwith parameter design
so thanks again...Rich

cruies control

The modern cars with abs and or esp etc monitor the rotation speed of all wheels to determine if things are ok.

Any discrepency that the computer thinks is out of normal parameters causes a response ( eg turning of cruise control) and fault messages.
