Hi everyone I am looking at buying a E280 estate model year 2006 so has the later headlamps. It has done 75 thousand miles but the back suspension seems to sit low when vehicle is turned off just above the tyres is this normal or should it stay up on the air suspension? Even with engine off? Also any other advice what to look for on these cars would be great as looking a my first merc ever! Many thanks

Hello and welcome,

Yes, the rear suspension should stay up - likely needs new bags

They seem to be very expensive via euro car parts. Do you know any good aftermarket ones? Also is possible that anyone with a E280 estate year 2006 could post a picture of wheel arch and tyre height (the gap) on another car so I can se what is normal? Many thanks

Many threads on the subject and recommendations for aftermarket ones - please have a search on the forum in the suspension section

Welcome!

As above the rear airbags are getting tired and starting to loose pressure when the vehicle is stood.
I’d get this seen to asap as the air pump will be working overtime to maintain the ride height. At that age of car I’d certainly refurbish the air pump kits are available. Arnott seem to be the go to aftermarket replacement bags not sure how expensive MB would be but worth enquiring for an exchange price.

It's a 16 year old E-Class Mercedes, it will require maintaining to get the best out of it.

They can be very reliable and give years of trouble free motoring - they are not a euro-box-shopping-trolley that you can get away with having a kwik-fit or back street garage service as they're complex and if poorly maintained can cost a great deal of money.

Suspension should last 100K miles once fixed, if not fixed, the pump will fail as per above leading to more £££. Engine and gearbox are generally reliable - although at 75K it should have had 2 x ATF changes. There are a few small issues that the V6 engine can have but nothing major and well covered on the forum.

You say that but the owners dogs have chewed both rear seat belts and and think merc quoted about £260 for the pair supplied what seemed not too bad as the little trim on centre gove box is 75 pounds

Merc parts can be expenive. You are buying a high emd car not as mentioned a shopping trolley.

If you are buying the car, the suspension, seatbelts are bargaining items for the negotiations.
