Can anybody tell me if all the V6 diesel engines in the E320 are all 224 Bhp. I was told that they came out in mid 2005 and replaced the 3.2 straight 6 engine.

As far as I'm aware in standard form they are all 224 bhp and come with the 7G-Tronic gearbox.

I thought they came in in V6 3.0Ltr 320 guise with the face lift in Oct 06 although I could be wrong.

The V6 was around in Nov 05 as I saw, at least a 280 version, at the dealer when I bought mine. So, yes, technically they came with the faclift but there are some pre-facelift models with the V6 cdi in them. Come to think about it my friend's V6 cdi is a pre-facelift model. Its easy enough to tell though - open the bonnet, look at the log book, just start it up and listen.

For future reference, can you explain the advantage of the V6 over the straight 6
More power, slight increase in fuel economy, more power and less CO2 so allegedly better for the environment, smaller so fits in the C Class & ML Class also it has more power.

Didn't this engine replace the straight 5 cylinder 2.7 litre ?

…. and a straight six is a difficult shape block to make work in conjunction with the front crumple zone. With a V6 - compact and square in plan (well relatively), it is much easier to design the structure to prevent it pushing back into the cabin.

It replaced the IL6 3.2 & the IL5 2.7, it is available in 280CDI & 320CDI badges and the power is slightly different depending upon which car body it's bolted into.

No. The 280 replaced that. Although, the 280 and 320 are both the same 3.0L engine with one 'throttled' a bit.

That's right, just have different chips but same 3.0 V6 lump.

I love mine, excellent power across the rev range.

Went to a wedding in London on the weekend driving from Birmingham, my brother was following me in his Civic Type R (New Shape). We had a little play at times on the motorway and I dusted him everytime!! ;)

It's an awesome engine. I can't believe how economical it is either. We only use our CLS for long runs of about 140 miles but at the end of each leg, including a little urban driving, we get nothing less than 43 mpg. That's us cruising at the legal motorway speeds (ish), just to add.

Which ain't bad considering my (much less powerful) CLK270CDi just about manages 44mpg on a run....

The newer V6 engines as far as I am aware use more fuel in practice than the old I6, but are smoother and quieter. They should also confer a handling benefit as its a more compact engine so less mass is held further forward in the engine pay, the safety aspects have been touched upon too.

Performance the V6 320 is faster by a bit than the old I6 320 but by how much. its not as economical (some I6 cars are getting well over 40mpg conistantly) and on the other forum a few V6 owners whinge about the consumption, and a 280 owner see's just 33mpg. Thats not great. But refinement etc its very good

Yes all V6 E320 are 224bhp, the V6 2987cc engine can sometimes be found in 2005 registered cars but are more readily available in the 2006 faceliftt model, the Bhp from this engine is retarted and called the E280 which produces 190 bhp, only in the S320 Cdi is the Bhp increased too 235Bhp, unless the car has a Brabus chip where an additional 47Bhp is added to the mix. Excellent engine the newer V6, Almost in the "i can't believe its not butter varitey"

Ps i can easily get 40+ from the new E320 i think the guy getting 33mpg from his 280 should bring it out of town more and instead of looking at his Fuel consumption should maybe look at a few Speed limit signs
