Mercedes GLA 2.1 Diesel timing chain replacement

I went to a garage to inspect a rattling noise when starting the car in cold weather. I was told that I need to change the timing chain, and I was quoted £2500. Is that normal nowadays? It seems expensive for just changing a chain. I understand there's a lot work involved, but still, £2.5k??

Maybe they're taking the engine out and replacing chain and guides .

Seems a bit rich. Perhaps ring a couple of other mercedes specialists to see if they quote differently.

If.. I still hav mine when that arises(hope not) I will just have to struggle and do it myself... I will buy chain and tensioner in preparation and as ussual research how to.. N make sure my tooling is fit for the job.

As far as I know you are correct it is a big job never thought I’d see a modern manufacturer put the timing chain at the bulkhead end but there you are never say never. I remember SAAB built the triumph engine under licence in the 70/80s and turned the engine 180 deg never thought I see it in the next millennium.

I’d certainly be asking for several quotes and certainly not tempted to cutting costs on parts
