Hi there. I am looking to buy a Mercedes ML 270 CDI......I was close to buying one on sunday...but someone got there before me.. :(

What I wanted to know / ask was: How easy is it to remove the "Spare wheel + tailgate mount" or what ever it's called.. Here is a pic.. In my opinion it doesn't look nice, so if i was to buy this car (just an example) can I or a garage (not mercedes) remove this??

And if I can remove this... will there be any rust / damage or anything expected underneath it as the area is not exposed due to the tyre and rack

Sorry 4 all the "newbie" questions

thanks very much for reading this. I look forward to reading your reply's

What a monstrosity. I had an ML270cdi for a year and 15,000 miles and liked it very much. But the wheel was not on the back like your photo. I can't believe removing it will be more than a few bolts. But you can buy most without the appendage on the back. Quasimodo?

Yes you can remove it but you will be left with holes in the back of the bumper.

If you buy an ML with the wheel carrier, I would be intrested to buy it, if you want to sell it.

With THAT thing on the back - how the hell, does the tailgate rise?

p.s. On the M6/M6Toll/M40 last night - in the SNOW  - I was SO glad I was in a 4x4. :p - and yes, little Ka's, Clio's, Corsa's etc etc., STILL wanted to try and get past me in the snow-bound outside lane. They couldn't.

I had a friend with one of these,

Stupid design, hir wife when coming back to car with pram could hardly open it. The wheel and carrier swings out (so hopefully no one parks to close or you havn't parked u[p close to a fence or wall) and then the tail gate opens.

One thing though they seem to fetch silly money on flea bay £300 upto £500

Can you get blanking pieces that fill the holes it would leave after removing it? maybe ring a merc garage to ask?

Good luck with the car.

What a daft idea. - unlock carrier, swing to one side, open tailgate - put shopping etc in - close tailgate, swing carrier back, lock carrrier. Arrive home and repeat ...... OMG :(

Hi,

Think the only benifit its the full size spare? It also makes it awkard if you tow as means access to boot it very limited.

I have seen a 'case' that covers a full size spare for the inside (goes up against side rear windows where the 7 seat option would be) very rare though.

I would take it off and flog it on flea bay :)

A full size spare for mine (20x40/295) would take up half the boot :D

Best left for the nice AA man, the emergency 'skinny' spare and a couple of cans of high pressure foam to sort out, m'thinks.!

:O I don't like the sound of that. The reason why I was asking is because there is a cheap inspiration model (sat nav, 205hp, Xenons, Parking sensors front n back etc) but the downside is that it has this ugly wheel stuck to its back. But i will keep on looking .

Thanks everyone for the replys.

http://search.autotrader.co.uk/es-u...ARS&make=&model=&min_pr=&max_pr=&max_mileage=

ive got my eyes on this one

http://search.autotrader.co.uk/es-u...ARS&make=&model=&min_pr=&max_pr=&max_mileage=

Is it any good for the price??

Whatcar valuations say:-

Dealer £14,560
Private £12,660
Part exchange £12,160
Trade £11,610
Cost new £31,715

 A few quid more here and there. BUt I dont know... Im still looking. It must have LUX pack / Parking sensors (Xenons lights would be a +) but I cant be to picky, budget is £14000 and it must be a face lift.. Black, Silver or Blue..270 CDI and <65000miles ^^

Hello,

Did you see the inspiration model, as it has nicer leather seats, smart alloys, amg style front grille, dark wood trim, leather wheel and shifter. also I noticed that one hand command but was missing extra rear seats.

In my book and the guides the inspiration IS worth more than a normal model.

The blue one however does look nice, I think if your happy with them the price looks good.

OOh I fitted parking sensors for £30 so Xenons a better option to have as after maket far more expensive. If you want to see some pics of my Inspirtion let me know.

As an idea here is the valuation of a petrol Inspiration same year / millage as blue one.

Mercedes-Benz M-Class 4x4 (98-06) ML350 Inspiration 5dr 2002 (52)53,000 miles
Dealer £17,310
Private £15,010
Part exchange £14,460
Trade £13,910
Cost new £36,680

Cheers

So in your opinion i should go for the Xenons instead... I hate halogen lights.. they are so dim ^^

Factory fitted parking sensors look nicer as they are integrated into the bumper and you also get front and rear... are after market ones equally as good? How do they look on the bumper??

very nice man...id love to find one like yours :) so your sensors are body colored which is excellent...but how do they "stick on" the bumper?? Drilling or are they "stickey pad types"... and also i noticed you only have 2.... factory fitted ones have 4... is there any noticebale difference in performance.. also can you get the front sensors as well?

Hello,

I drilled the 'flaps' wasn't happy about it but priced the parts and they were £15 plus vat so thought if I mess up not too bad.

It was actually dead easy with the kit, works very well and with the two it picks up anything to the side and back so not sure why they have 6 on if you chose the option from new?

If you notice the leather is stitched (like the ML55, the dark wood, chrome rimmed dials, leather wheel, gear knob, chrom grilles, special alloys, mats, badges etc..

I would look out for the inspiration model if you can they are very nice...
