Dear Members,

I have heard that the cylinder head and engine block are the same on the OM642.930 (Mercedes S320 cdi - 2006) and on the JEEP (Chrysler) OM 642 engine. Is this true?

Thank you in advance!

They are the same family of engines so will be substantially the same.
That said Mercedes do have variations in castings that reflect the usage for the engine. If the first six numbers of the engine number are the same then they are interchangeable.
The first six numbers are 3 for the engine family (in your case 642) then 3 for the variant.

Thank you! In the S-class w221 the 320cdi motor code is OM642.930, in the JEEP it is different, but start with OM642. Nevertheless, I was told that the cylinder head and engine block are the same in every OM642, and this is what I need to know.

Thank you.

No they are not and that's what I was saying. The castings are different if they have different numbers.
For example engine mount locations, ancillary brackets, bolt sizes (I know some OM642 engines use 10mm bolts in one location where others use 8mm for example). Vacuum pumps are also in different locations on some versions.sump pans are different. There are many subtle differences where things mount on there may or may not be the relevant mounting holes if you don't fit like for like.
