Mercedes sl 1980's - Sorry - wrong place last time!

Hi There,

I'm in the market for an old 1980's Mercedes SL class (I'll admit i'm on a pretty limited budget of 5K max) and I am wondering what I should look out for when purchasing the car?

I have been told the following which I don't know if it is true or not.

1) on Cars this old there is likley to be a fair degree of internal welding at the budget I am looking at.

2) all these old SL have a slight problem of rain water leaking through the air vents.

Are the above points true and is there anything else I should be looking out for? (What's a London job for example!!)

Any advice is much apprieciated.

keep an open mind and look for rust everywhere, even where you cant see it. Okay, you might be looking at higher mileage or older models on your budget, but that doesn't mean they'll be all weld and no metal. It all depends on how reasonably priced it is, and how much the owner wants to get shot of it. Consider travelling, as I'm sure you'll pay a premium in London over elsewhere. Also don't be in a rush.
Search on SL or 107 here and you'll find loads of good advice on what and where to look for trouble.
