i have an SL500 1992 with 82K, the battery went down a few weeks back, recharged and it went down again. couple of days later asked merc dealer to change(plus do other jobs) and when car came back it quickly became obvious that something was wrong as four electrical items did not work, ie rear view mirrors unless doors were open, radio etc. put car back to dealers to fix at their cost.
on first trip after this visit & four days later and approx 6 miles, the ABS & ASR lights came on. took it back to dealers and after doing all their tests plus fitting new sender units they have told me that i need a new hydraulic unit at £2380.97 & ASR control unit at £1259.72 (whew) as possibly one of the solenoids had failed.
being an ex pilot of fifty years standing and not believing in coincidences i cannot get it out of my mind that somehow all events are related and there must be a way out, does anyone know of this problem, a cheaper source of a units will new units cure the problem etc.??

Hi

I would get a second opinion. I doubt they have caused the problem. But I doubt very much (but I not saying it can't be) that the unit is at fault. They tend to be very reliable unlike later 210 models. I don't think I have ever changed one & its cure the problem.

Get a second opinion first

hello,

I believe that if the car is incorrectly jump-started, the resulting electrical spike can damage the sensitive electronics in the ABS/ASR units. The Overvoltage protection relay should safeguard this to some extent, but not always. (check the fuse on this relay) If your battery was dead, the garage may have jump-started the car resulting in your problems, but this will be hard to prove.

Arnold.
