Buy a 20yr old spend 5k and have something reliable and without all the dealer elastic cords. (sans electronics crxp)

You mean have everyone laugh assuming one is poor and unable to keep up with the Jones? can’t have that now in this day and age….

Too many folks are wrongly caught up in the powerful web called ‘keep them poor strategy’.

Our 2009 211 (646) will hopefully tick that box,
the 2014 Viano (651) doesn't tick it so well.

Our daughter took us (with my dosh btw) to a nice Mayfair restaurant. I don't know why they let people like me into Mayfair, cos I don't fit.
Then on to the Shard.
Sat in 'Spoons, cos covid was still restricting access to other posh places after the Shard, she said "this is the 1st time you have looked happy all night". I hope she learned something from that.

The best part of the evening was when leaving the Shard, a V12 Aston Martin pulled in. Very nice bit of kit, and fairly noisy as it bubbled and burbled. It was a genuine question by Mrs Me, and at volume, "is that a diesel?" She couldn't understand just how funny that was.

She has a point though, some so called
"Super/Hyper" cars do sound like a bag of spanners. :)

I don't really giv a sh1t about Jones I just seek economic motoring, and in my view modern cars are like apple stuff tied to maker and designed to fleece you. I retired so watch pennies now. Not tight but I WANT TO CHOOSE where I spend my. cash, not some snot nose in some design office.

I know I forgot to add a smiley but, I’m the same and sure you knew how I meant that!

I only have good memories of Renaults. My uncle used to pick us up from London and take us to stay with relatives in Wales during the summer holidays in a Renault 16.
My Dad had a Renault Fuego in the 80's and I had an Espace for 10 years which was strictly a Matra.

No idea what they are like today though.
I had two Renault 16's a TS & a TX in the 70's, both 3 speed autos both very reliable. Still properly the most comfortable seats I have ever sat in.
We were living in Germany at the time, so it was a great car for doing the 650 mile trip home.
I replaced that with a Renault 20TS, bought it 3 months old for a silly knockdown price. It was very reliable, but a complete rust bucket.
Garaged every night, washed once a week, & never involved in a bump, but rusted like mad.
I was going to but a new Mercedes 240D tax free, but the Renault price was a massive saving just as I was leaving the army.

That's not addressing the inefficiency inherent in using hydrogen. It's also one of the few areas where hydrogen has a place due to the low downtime of that type of equipment not being conducive to stopping yo recharge.
Other areas are HGVs and aircraft.
Private vehicles are not a good match.

I've subscribed to 'bangernomics' for the last 20 years and it proven to be very cheap motoring.
Best was the E240 estate. Bought at 108k miles and sold at 167k miles when the jacking point disappeared up inside the sill.
Paid £600 for it and sold it for £600.
In the interim outside basic maintenance items it cost a crank sensor, radiator (pinhole leak), two rear gas spheres, aircon compressor and a pair of front wings (I could have left them but they looked pretty tatty). Call it a grand all in.
Over 6 years that was a bargain.

Not convinced that that won't change rapidly.. However I am not sure there will be maker support due to investment in duracells. If the dtf guys stay out of it, theoretically hydrogen vehicles should last a long time.

I've gone from Mercedes to Renault, many times with 12TL, Fuego, Laguna's and they have been all at a very cheap price and have had many many miles of near trouble free motoring, just the normal wear n tear to deal with..........................But don't worry, I am with Mercedes at the moment, actually, I have been with Mercedes since 1982 :D
