It was on the discovery channel the tonight. It was slightly misleading as they said you could put filtered used cooking oil in any diesel engine. They are not really up on diesels in the US, it is not recommended at all for high pressure CDI engines.

The full show had the addons for fuel economy too. Magnets, super carburetters etc all of those used more fuel lol

They did a piece on Fifth Gear yesterday as well, dirty cooking oil straight into the tank on an old merc.

No warnings at all on the possible consequences on the latest diesels or on certain types of fuel pumps, I wonder how many wrecked pumps will follow from it....

Was going to try it in mine being lot older car. But fresh oil straight from bottle and as a small % of a full tank. Local shop has some at 30p a litre could save myself over 60p a litre . With the colder weather coming in, this experiment is going to wait till next year though.

50/50 is a good mix apparently if you arent going to refine it first and cut down to 25/75 in the winter months..

Yeah 25/75 sounds good . Still going to wait till next year though as im still getting used to the car. In my modest experience most problems are heard before the physical problem shows itself.

It's a 300SD in the video clip, I think, which has a 603 300D 2.5-litre 5-cylinder turbo diesel or a 602 300D 3-litre 6-cylinder turbo diesel

There's actually quite a lot of work going on in America with SVO and other diesel alternatives. Most of it is grass roots stuff, like here and on the continent, but unlike here there's no tax disincentive

A proper Elsbet (or similar) conversion with heated supplies, filters, modded injectors & etc will cost probably £2k over here and you have to pay tax on the fuel on top so I don't see it taking off big time

This will change if we get a more enlightened tax regime here but I, for one, am not going to hold my breath waiting for that to happen

I ran a peugeot HDI estate on 50/50 mix with new veg oil for a couple of years with no adverse effects at all....I did some research on it beforehand and found that most modern diesel engines will run on it no problems once you get a good "mix" figured out...Only thing to watch out for is the fuel pump....apparently lucas ones are not so good but bosch ones are up to the job..
I did go to approx 60/40 in the colder weather tho..

that does suggest that not only did someone else watch fifth gear, but that they also decided to listen to it as well, and then act upon whatever it was they did on it.

I dont think all them varibles will happen!
