I just went through the same process...

Some advice from a trader was buy at Parkers used prices... (which I think are a little skinny for resale profit)

For real world I watched eBay and Autotrader.

Then I did some driving and visited a few.

It certainly gives more sobering valuations than some of the others and may be more in tune with the current market.

Unhappily, it does not necessarily tell us what we want to hear and values my R129 for retail sale at about half the price cited by the What Car valuation engine!

This all assumes, of course that there is some science in the process. I remember trying to sell a car to an Aberdeenshire farmer in the 1960s. I needed to recoup my buying costs (£40), so I priced it at £50 and reluctantly let him beat me down to £40! The numbers are derisory these days, but I got what I wanted and he went off with a decent car, happy in the knowledge that he had beaten me down by 20%!! ;):):D

Glass's Guide is normally regarded as the bible in the trade. Hard to beat. And if you go to their website they will give you a full valuation for about £3, which shows, trade, part ex, private sale and dealer prices. Their valuations are based on real world data from dealers on prices actually being paid in the market place. If I'm selling, I get the valuation and show it to dealers until I at least get the figures shown by Glass's. Seems to work.

And if buying, I get a value on the last 3 in my shortlist, and use that.

Also, you can use the MB search engine for asking prices at dealers. They are very competitve nowadays -especially as you go further north. To give you an example: last September I was looking for a E220cdi auto, Avantgarde estate with leather and some other bits and bobs. Used the MB search and found prices varied from £25k to £37,500 for low mileage, nearly new, 2008 ones. The one at £25k happened to have all the bits I wanted. Wakefield. Unbelievable 16k off list price at only 6,000 miles and they offered to deliver it at no charge (250 miles).

Hi Guys, just comitted to a December 07 (57) E220 CDI AG, 12K miles, leather and pre wire with 6 months tax, delivery and boot liner £17800. Really pleased as I have been looking for about 4 weeks and going through the same things as other guys on here about when to jump.

Well done Paul. Effectively that is a new car in all but dates - and at a huge discount to the list price. :D

Patience is indeed a virtue - but a bit of guile, cunning and predatorial flare don't go amiss either!!

Well done. Great bargain. Was that dealer or private?

Should be on annual servicing or 15,500 miles whichever comes sooner. So should have been done in December. Any record of that?

Morning guys, Main dealer purchase, 1st service carried out already. I believe that Mercedes do them if there is 3000 miles or less showing on the service indicator.
Yes Malcolm I will enjoy it, I purchased my first Mecedes 3 1/2 years ago and enjoyed it so much I purchased one for my wife. Would never buy anything else now.
Whilst showing the E Class to my wife on the internet, I noticed an E Class 08
AG 12K with leather, parktronic heated seats and pre wire for £18800 so there are some great buys out there. That was on autotrader if anyone else is looking.
Paul.

More info

This site was suggested recently on the forum: http://www.wisebuyers.co.uk/

Had a look at this site and can honestly say that these prices are the most "Real World" that I have ever seen published. Now is not a good time to deal if you have to part exchange but if you are in a position to buy outright, last week of this month would be very lucrative I M O.

Looking at the prices it might start me off on the Lease Hire route again I now have a car with a low residual value and my losses in outlaid capital will be more than a competative lease which will include all service work etc. Worth considering?

Hi guys, all change, I have reversed out of the 57 plate and gone for an April 08 E220 CDI AG 12k miles Leather, Auto, Parktronic, Telephone Pre Wire and Heated Seats. £18k. I have to pay delivery and the colour is not my first choice Indium Grey but it is a relatively new colour to Mercedes and I quite like it. Would have preferred black but I think this was too good to miss.
By the way, I'm sure the majority of people on here do not think you are sad Malcolm given the amount of information you come up with for people!
Paul.

Paul,

If ever I change cars again, I shall want to retain you as my adviser! :)

Where do you find deals like these - is the market generally that bad, or do you have a secret?

Just lucky, caught it on Autotrader from garage in Leicester 1st thing this morning. Came from Mercedes Financial services so it's a Mercedes owned car. Plus the fact that I had sold mine and had the money sat there. The guy came down from £18800. I have to pay road tax plus delivery.
Paul.

You all might find this interesting r not but traders ????

Searching Autotrader and other sources I found a dealer within 30 Miles of home who has for sale 3 of the cars that I will be test driving over the next few weeks, these were 1, Range Rover 3lit D Vogue £24500. 2,MB Ml 320 CDi £21500 and 3, BMW X5 £19000 not and insignificant amount of cash to be spending in the current climate. Sent and e-mail followed up with a phone call left a message and yep you gussed it since Tuesday no one has come back to me. Leave a bitter taste.

For anyone wanting a idea on what their car is worth then Glass's really is the best and only guide to use because as Hawk as said it is what we use in trade exclusively(I've yet to meet any dealer who doesn't).

Using something like Parker's and then going to a dealer and saying that a car is over priced because Parkers say so is going to get you nowhere with the dealer....I'm sorry to say but Parkers and other cheapo guides bought at newsagents and such just get laughed at in the trade.

May surprise some, just how competitive dealers are having to be at the moment. Tried the search engine on the MB website today and quite a few 2007 E220cdi Avantgarde with sensible miles around the £18-£19k mark. Great value these days. Recessions are so kind to car buyers.
