just become a new merc owner, and I found two good forums, mercedesclub.org.uk and mbclub.co.uk, dare I ask which is the best of the two or if there is any history there?

Hi Mathew, and welcome to the forum. this forum is more for those who like to talk about and solve problems with their cars, we only have two threads for non MB things where you can let off steam as it is private from the outside world.
The other has many threads that have nothing to do with cars at all.

I hope that you will stick around and join in here. :D:D:D

Being a member of both forums (that will get me banned for sure) You tend to use whatever forum for whatever your need. As Malcolm has said, this is tecky whilst the other is fun but informative. I have no particular preference apart from the social side of Mbclub.co.uk, which seems to be more active than this forum. That is no slant of this excellent site. My advice (if I were asked) would be to join in with both and see where you go.

I certainly joined both - I'm probably most after sharing techy info... I'm going to be fixing everything I can on this car myself.. in fact I cant remember anytime I've been to a garage for anything in recent years.. I had baptism by fire about 5 years ago and built a kit car.. which incidentally I'm just rebuilding with its new fire breathing engine at the moment (I've custome built a 2.0 zetec turbo) ... days left to completion :)

thanks :) It was a kind of neccesity really - I'm a bit of a petrol head and to have the things I want I couldn't afford to take them to a garage every time I've broken them.. Especially the various land rover projects I've had - they tend to get battered and broken... Land Rover service prices are up there with official MB I'd reckon!

I was very lucky to find someone on the kit car forum I'm a member of basically teach me everything I need to know, from changing brake pads properlly to rebotring a block and fitting low compression forged pistons and rods - without him I'd still be pretty clueless!

I try to approach all things like he did to me.. I'm now well practised at welding amongst other things and anyone nearby is welcome to 'free'* welding anytime I'm not busy :)

*chuck me the price of a curry and some cider and I'm a happy man!

Good night and thanks for all your help and pointers :)

Aha! A fellow LR nut then? I recently sold a 1983 RRC V8, 3sp auto. Over the 2 years I owned it, I fitted a 2" lift kit, re-bushed the suspension, new A frame ball joint, steering box, home made radius arms, dislocation cones, fitted underbody armour, leccy fans, waterproofed the ignition, and so on. The only jobs I farmed out were welding ones. They are great fun, but in the end I could not support the 10MPG fuel habit it had! A shame as I laned the Rangie all over the place and loved it.

Welcome

Hi Matthew

I am a member of dozens of different forums but only three associated with MB of which this forum is the best (IMO). The American club and its forum makes for an interesting read but it has a different feel about it. I tend to think there is a degree of rivalry between this and 'the other' British MB club.

When you state ... 'just become a new merc owner' ... do you mean you now own a new Merc' or you are new to Merc' ownership? I assume that being new to the forum you are probably new to Merc' ownership? If so, you'll find this forum and its membership very knowledgible and friendly. It's also my impression that the membership is growing rapidly which is indicative of the quality of this forum.

well I was but I had enough of spending all of my money.. The latest project was a C reg 90, converted to 200tdi, 2" lift, external roll cage, disk brakes all round (including hand brake) front mounted winch, chequer plate all round all sprayed olive drab. 33" tyres.

Was a good old girl, but when you throw these things at mountains they do brake a bit!

Knowing you a new one would bore you to death, as there would be nothing that you could do to it
