metering unit

like an idiot, i was testing my '90 200E to see how many miles i will get to a tank of fuel and i left it run out.

since this happened, the car suffers regular spluttering sessions which pass and i have been getting a strong smell of petrol in the cab. changing the tank (which was dodgy anyway) and the filter close to the tank has done a little to help. injector cleaner didn't do much at all.

i asked an independant merc specialist to look at it but he won't be able to for about two weeks. though, he did suggest it might be the metering unit.

does this sound plausible? is it possible it's blocked with tank junk and if so is it cleanable?

what about trapped water? is it in any way serviceable or checkable.

Dunno if this helps but on VW bosch metering units, if the banjo bolt holding the fuel supply pipe to the metering head has a raised circle on its head, it contains a tiny filter gauze, which tend to clog up........

would it run in an odd fashion as a result? is it user (or abuser) friendly if i decided to have a look myself? thanks mate.

they do suffer with water ingress but i wouldnt fiddle about too much with them if it turns out that you need one , i can obtain recon units at very good prices

get me the part number ie "0438 100 ???" and i ll get you a price of a fully recon one with a 12 m,onth warranty OR take your unit in,check and recalibrate, could be cheaper
