Sad though it might seem, I sometimes browse through the MOT history of my previous cars. One of them, KS62KHD has had a mileage jump back from 86932 to 30047 when it failed. As that mileage was re-entered when it was repaired and passed, I doubt that could be 'finger trouble'. Maybe all will be clearer at its next MOT, but what do you guys think in the meantime?

It may have been a simple error originally and then the tester just used the same figure again without checking. With it clearly on the history, it’s not going to fool anyone if it does get sold.

Sadly far too common and this is why I personally do all i can to ensure what ever I buy or source, stacks up. Take time to look through the paperwork with an eagle eye for dates and mileages across MOTs, online checks, receipts for things like alignment or ad hoc repair etc. incase anything raises an eyebrow.

Dreaming of a CL55k - one day maybe....
Look at the MOT's either side. If there is just this one "oddity" (so say it was 66,000, 75,000, 30,000 then 86,000) then I'd say it was a finger slip

If it went 66,000, 75,000, 86,000, 30000. 41000, 53,000 then it's been clocked and very unprofessionally!

If you bought it from a dealer and they are still in business you would have recourse to them, as they have a duty of care to check these things - we check MOT history before we sell a car for just such an oddity.

I sold a 1979 Renault 20TS in 1987 with about 80K miles on the clock to a private buyer.
About 6 months later I saw the car parked up & unattended. In the days when you could read the displayed milage through the side window, I had a look. It was now displaying about 40K miles. I did think about reporting it, but I didn't in the end.

Out of curiosity, let’s say if I was to replace the w221 with another MB, is there a genuine way a dealer or Indy can interrogate the cars systems to confirm the true mileage a vehicle has covered?

Great!

So this begs the question, what is the point of people still clocking cars?

Surely a used dealer would have the mileage verified if they are not bent themselves. If a punter blindly believes the numbers they see on the dash then they are stupid. Surely lease companies have clocked onto the fact that most people buy a modern sh!box on tick as cheap as they can, batter to within an inch of its life and then keep clocking it back before the service and hand back.

I suspect the second sentence here pretty well sums it up.
