I dont know what was really motivating me, but I've ended up buying a bottle of Millers Diesel Power Plus and I have put a slug in my 05 W221 220CDI (actually 4 slugs to date for 80litres) - and the engine is singing! Its not only the extra oomph - but it sounds less clatery on start up and idle ... this is a 50k car, auto box, last of the 150bhp Euro 4 models before the 170 bhp facelift...

SO come on doom-dayers and nay-sayers, with your 'I told you so' Tshirts (!) - what damage AM I doing to my Mercs engine?!

More on Cetane Numbers form Wikipedia ...

The Millers stuff says it raises the Cetane number by approx '4' - so In Europe that would give a Cetane of 55 , this from Wikipedia ...

""Cetane number or CN is a measurement of the combustion quality of diesel fuel during compression ignition. It is a significant expression of diesel fuel quality among a number of other measurements that determine overall diesel fuel quality.

Cetane number is actually a measure of a fuel's ignition delay; the time period between the start of injection and start of combustion (ignition) of the fuel. In a particular diesel engine, higher cetane fuels will have shorter ignition delay periods than lower cetane fuels.

Generally, diesel engines run well with a CN from 40 to 55. Fuels with higher cetane number which have shorter ignition delays provide more time for the fuel combustion process to be completed. Hence, higher speed diesels operate more effectively with higher cetane number fuels. There is no performance or emission advantage when the CN is raised past approximately 55; after this point, the fuel's performance hits a plateau.

Premium diesel may have additives to improve CN and lubricity, detergents to clean the fuel injectors and minimize carbon deposits, water dispersants, and other additives depending on geographical and seasonal needs.

In Europe, diesel cetane numbers were set at a minimum of 49 in 1994 and 51 in 2000.

Alkyl nitrates (principally 2-ethyl hexyl nitrate [1]) and di-tert-butyl peroxide are used as additives to raise the cetane number. ""

My bolding, and the last sentance confirms with the label on my bottle of Millers Diesel Sport - so am I in the clear?

S class
So basically it needs to be used with every fill of the fuel tank to enable any benefits to be ongoing..

I don't think you are doing any damage to your engine, but others will be berating you for adding something that is not needed.

I've been using millers for donkey's years, especially since the removal of sulphur from diesel, and have now gone over to the power sport 4 for the euro 4 engine, and (hope i don't regret this) haven't had a spot of bother from my diesel engines or fuel systems.

Having said that i also over service my vehicles anyway, and have been duly chastised here for wasting precious world resources by changing my oil too frequently, so it could be nothing to do with the millers.

Carry on using it, i can find a link somewhere where you can get 5 litre can for something like £50, that reduces the price to about half what you pay for 500ml bottles of the stuff.
