I have noticed a split in the belt at the front of the engine linking the alternator etc.Does anybody know if I should be worried by this, and if so is it expensive to buy and replace, either by myself if it is a straight forward job or by a garage if its not a long job to do.Also if it were to snap then would it cause big problems. Is it a timing belt ? Thank you...P.S its a 2000 model

No its not a timing belt, it has many names, a poly belt, serpentine belt, alternator drive belt. grooved v belt..basically fairly easy to change, the biggest problem is remembering how it is routed...it isnt a big job but it is slightly awkward for the novice, so I would suggest getting an indie to change it as it shouldnt cost a lot...
