Hi All, Hope someone can help. I have an ML 270 CDi W163 Year 2001. I seem to have noticed what I think is a fuel leak. It is directly underneath the inlet manifold. I can`t see where the leak is originating from but if I look on the engine under the manifold ( I think there is an engine mount there ) I can see what I think is diesel. I have obviously cleaned it off with a pressure washer and sure enough it returns again.

Before I begin any work can anyone offer suggestions to what this problem normally is ? I can take pictures of the diesel on the engine if it helps you guys single out the location of the leak.

Any suggestion would be much appreciated.

Thank you

Jon

At a guess I'd say its the fule lines running into the fuel filter, has it had a service recently. Plastic pipes perish with age and heat and can leak.

The fuel filter and its associated fuel pipes is situated on the top side of the inlet manifold which is above the area you have described, remove the plastic engine cover on top of the engine and check all fuel pipes and connections to the fuel filter.

You might find the blank plug on the top leaking, very common fault a few years ago, standard one was white, now in black, fuel line and end cap next to the rail!!

Hi All, Thank you for the feedback.

Yes I have removed the plastic covers and recently I have changed the fuel filter and the clear plastic fuel pipes as the fuel pump had a leak on one of its fittings. The leak is not comming from here nor is it coming from the top of the fuel cooler,it seems to be comming out from under the inlet manifold or under the fuel cooler.

What is the blanking plug ? If it is on the top of the engine on the high pressure fuel rail I don`t believe this is the source of the leak as I would see it.

I will take a picture of the location tomorrow to help you all understand where I mean.

Thank you again for your suggestions.

have you considered the flaps under the inlet manifold? I had the same problem and it turned out it was coming from the inlet manifold. Once the inlet manifold was removed too fit a new one it was the holes for the flaps where completely worn out, also one of the flaps had separated and lodged in the engine. Luckily it hadn’t gone all the way in but if it had it could have caused a lot of damage! Since having the new inlet manifold fitted the leaking has stopped, it’s worth looking into, run you fingers under the manifold and see whether it is coming from their, it’s worth spending money replacing the manifold now before something serious happens and it ends up costing a fortune!!

I think he’s probably got it fixed considering it was 13 years ago ;-) always good for other people with similar problems though
