Hi, I've just discovered this site and I think it looks very useful.

I've got an ML 270Cdi 6 speed which is 2 years old but has only done 14K mls. It stand in the garage sometimes for upto 2 weeks without being used and I think this has contributed to the problem I am having.

Sometimes, but not always and I cannot make it do it, when I go to declutch I find that the free play in the pedal has increased to about half the available travel. Occasionally the pedal has not returned at all and I have to hook my toe under it and lift it up, even then there is massive amounts of free play and I struggle to change gear. This always seems to happen in heavy traffic i.e. stop/start.

I have spoken to my dealer about it, the vehicle is still under warranty, but until I can demonstrate the problem to them the don't really know what to do. They have checked for leaks and that the pedal is not fouling on the carpet etc.

Does anyone have any idea has to how I can find the source of the problem next time it appears or any other thoughts.

Thanks

Sounds like just the problem my wife's Fiat Tipo had a few years ago. It made for some very exciting driving I can say.
It was as Andy said the clutch master cylinder and it got progressivly worse tell it failed completely, and the only way to return it was to pull it up with your foot. I can't remember the exact fault with the master cylinder I think it was where the clutch cable joined the piston on the cylinder.

Fiat Tipo's have a cable operated clutch so this wouldn't apply.

I agree with Andy.

The master cylinder is either flipping the seals so wont return or there is something fouling the fluid inlet orifice.

It would be worth having the dealer check for the correct amount of pedal free play. If there is no free play or the pedal sticks sometimes, then the piston seal will foul the inlet.

Hi All,

Thanks for the input, I've discussed it with my dealer and they are going to fit a new master cylinder. I'll let you know how it goes.

Cheers
