I was driving my ml270 the other day when I decided to put on my heated seat to ease my sore back. After about 2-3 minutes the seat got extremley hot and started to smoulder.I stopped and got out the smell of burning was terrible and panic set in.I had a bottle of water in the car which i poured over the base of the seat which seemed to extinguish the smouldering and smoke.maybe not the brightest thing to do as i dont know how the Heated seat operates.(voltage ect...)There is a tiny scorch mark on the cushion base but not anything you would notice.Has anyone had similar problems with this?

Don't know what would have caused it - I would have thought the fuse should have blown before it got to this stage:eek::eek:

Hello and welcome with your hot seat, the heating pad is faulty and must be replaced, it is something that you can do yourself if you are that way inclined

Seen it once before.

Remedy is new leather as the pad comes with it from memory.
A swift letter to DCUK would probably not go amiss either.

Don't get them to do it.

Order the part yourself and get a leather trimmer to fit it or an mb specialist.

Really, this is exactly the kind of thing for which 'GOODWILL' repairs at Mercedes' expense was designed. I would definitely ask. BTW your dealer has some money from Mercedes to spend on 'goodwill' at their own initiative. Try them too.

This is a problem that MB do know about. I think there is a mod to the frame as well. I bet the burn hole is on the base, right side, towards the back. Just in the correct place to burn your right butt cheek:( Goodwill should cover it if the car has full MB history.

Good will from MB is a joke, I asked for some help towards my leaking struts at 20k miles and £2.6k bill to put right and they said no, So I will never direct anyone to a MB outlet for repairs

No harm in trying though hey Malc. I think you should flutter your eyelids more & have another go at a different dealership:cool:

It depends on how many heating wires there are, if the seat was on position 1 and two wires touched, the current would go up, but it would have to be in excess of heating position 2 before it could blow the fuse.

I understand you reply, but surely if the current was enough to "scorch" the seat shouldn't it still have blown the fuse.

No it does not work like that, in the shorted state, if the current is still under the rating of the fuse then it cant blow, as the fuse does not know if position 1 or 2 is being used

I am very sad to hear this. And amazed. Lots of threads show Mercedes doing things under goodwill even on some cases with no fullMBSH.
Worth trying another dealer? Has this car got fullMBSH? A letter to MB UK could well help.

Have you done a separate thread on this problem and why it happened and whether it is likely to affect those of us who also have air suspension?

I cancelled the visit to the dealership on thursday after your replies.Ive decided to trade in the ML for a C class avantgarde had enough of replacing brake pads and discs and constant brake whine. The seat problem just adds to the problems with the car.(a shame because I like driving it)The dealership dosent know the meaning of the word GOODWILL trust me Ive dealt with them long enough to know this.To add insult to injury the salesman who sold me the car 13months ago for 22000 offered me 14000 in a trade in.Back to the old C class for me.Thanks for all ure advice.
Cheers.

The brake whine can be fixed

So can the leather for not much money.
