ML 270 key replacement

Grateful for any advice or pointers. I wish to replace a lost spare key/fob on my ML 270 ( 3 yrs old). Dealer is quoting min £200 and could be as much as £350 if there are issues with the programming.... why? Anyway, assume there must be a non main dealer solution at less cost. Would be grateful if anyone has positive experience of alternatives. This would just be a spare in case original lost.

The key has an immobiliser as well as an IR and RF transmitter with rolling codes. They are only able to be coded by Mercedes.
If they were available elsewhere for little money what do you think that would do for your insurance premium?
Having said that ~£150 appears to be the going rate for the dealers so you may want to find another dealer.
You can spend >£400 on a Ford key to put it in some perspective.

Small run of the mill diagnostic testers do have key programming in built, but these will only cover the run of the mill popular little cars. to do an MB you are looking at £2.5k for the set up to do it.

Just a thought,
Can you program your phone ir port to emulate your ir key fob by copying it through the ir port on your laptop?

As Blobcat says, there are things around the corner with buetooth this can be hooked up to diagnostic checks now.
I have not yet managed to sync the MB garage door opener yet on my car.
