Hi I've got knocking/chaffing coming from the parking brake, sort of comes on very faint then gets louder, when I mess about with my foot on the pedal as am driving I can stop it from doing it
When I am stopped the pedal goes past its normal on position in the park mode
I need to sort this:-
Has something come adrift with brake shoes
Has the cable broke
Do the shoes need adjusting
What parts might I need to get before I strip down
Does anyone know of a thread to strip the rear brakes down
Any help would be appreciated

Hi Kevin,

Sounds to me like a problem with the brake shoes, possibly one of the linings has become 'unbonded' from the brake shoe backing which would cause the 'chaffing' sound and also excess travel on the handbrake.

Remove the caliper and back-off the notched brake adjuster (#210) within the disc/drum so that you can remove the brake disc/drum (after removing the disc retaining screw)...........fit a new set of brake shoes and refit everything.

The whole job should be no more than approx 1 hour to do both sides.

Hi John & thanks very much for the reply
I think I can manage this
The way you have put it is the drum is within the dished part of the disc
I will investigate tonight

Hi Kevin,
Yes, the handbrake drum is combined within the rear disc. Just remove two bolts that hold the caliper and the single disc retaining screw and the disc/drum can be removed, you might have to slacken the adjuster with a flat bladed screwdriver which is accessed through one of the wheel stud holes in the disc.

When reassembling, turn the adjuster until the disc is locked and then back off just until the disc will turn freely.
