Hi a friends just got a Land rover V6 Diesel they similar acceleration and top speed but the on board computer is showing 20.6 mpg which is a lot less than the ML 270

Another great reason for owning a ML

The Land Rover would have to be fitted with a very clever engine indeed (which it isn't) to overcome the apalling aerodtnamics....

That's where the real economies come form, especially on the motorway, but it counts at all speeds above a walking pace.

My thread (ML 270 70+ stall / miss) produced 32.9 mpg

I did the 600 mile round trip and there was no diteriation with the improvement that I got when I changed the auto fluid.

I explained the improvement to a friend I was working with he is a car mechanic he said "why didn't you change the filter in the box"

The thing is that I didn't expect any improvement, I am going to change the filter when I get chance and bung another 2.5 lts of new in also try to use a new "O" ring with a slightly bigger cross section so the filter is atighter fit

I bought a TDV6 Disco new last year and have been delighted with it. I get 27mpg on a run (just driven from Belfast to Southampton) and 23mpg if just used for local runs. The build quality is vastly improved and nothing (touching wood) has gone wrong with it so far.

The big difference between an ML and a Disco is the lack of 7 seats in an ML (well the new ones anyway). If you are shopping for a 7 seater and comparing Merc with LR then the LR is much better value as for Merc you have to move up to a GL which is vastly more expensive. Even the old shape ML with seven seats doesn't compare because the third row in the LR gives you proper adult sized seats.

Just my musings from a very happy LR owner. Bet it breaks down now !

Was an E300TD, now a Lexus LS400
My mate has the TDV6 Disco, hes had it since new. Its had a new handbrake (the motor gets really screechy and noisy), but otherwise I think its been fine.

I've been in it loads of times, its a beautifully quiet and comfortable car. I've also done the off-road course a couple of times, theres no way an ML would be able to do what the Disco does.

In all fairness the Disco and the ML are 2 different beasts, the ML is great for green lanes, wet fields, dirt tracks etc, the Disco is from a long line off capable off roaders geared for the rough, but saying that I have had mine in some tough terrain and it lacks diff locks and descent control, like I said the LR range is properly geared for the rough.

A mate of mine last year had a brand new new shape Discovery, nice colour, finished off beautifully inside he wasnt happy though, 3 days old and the gearbox sprung a leak, a little later the clutch went, I do hope that LR have finally sorted out their previous build quality problems as I love the shapes of the Disco and RR.

Unfortunately IMO these sort of problems are caused by a lack of investment
in R&D, Trials & Testing. I thought that P38's were bad!! the 4.6 lasted for 70kmiles before letting go!!

Wonder who (if any one) is going to buy LR/Jag Group?

ML descent control does exist:
Engage Low Range, Select First and roll down hill. The brakes will be applied as necessary and the rear wheels will spin in reverse direction to the front wheels to maintain control. All this works upto 14mph.

Thats exactly how I did it but when I bent a rear engine support and lifted the gearbox, the tiptronic would not work so I could not engage 1 st, all repaired now, is that all descent control is anyway?

I think that you must have had some bad luck

I wasn't slagging the landrover off. I no a lot of people with these motors and have no feed back relating to these problems
It was a comparison as to the correct choice that I had made when I bought my ML 270
All though an ML won't win a trial out right it only needs to go where my 814 can for me, but I can save £855.00 on fuel cost over 12 months / 20,000 miles
Kevin

PS Im interested in this coment
"and the rear wheels will spin in reverse direction to the front wheels to maintain control"

The LR is a PROPER 4x4.. its got a ladder chassis and weighs and absoloute TONNE! (or three).. Hense the terrible economy.. The ML is just a jacked up monocoq road car with a 4x4 system. On the road the ML is miles better but off road the ML would be left on its belly scuffling for grip and twisting its chassis :)

Yes I agree "ML would be left on its belly scuffling for grip" just like the 110 landrover would be hence 111 inch ML wheel base

But disagree with "jacked up monocoq road car" my ML has a ladder chassis

Mine is a ladder chassis and the land rover guys I went off roading with said they were amazed how good my car was particularly with road tyres on, I did things they thought I would not be able to including an hill climb on sand, I wouldnt rite off the ML270 just yet, for me it serves its purpose just great.
