Hey any number of things could cause excessive fuel usage..underinflated tyres, short stop start journeys, dirty air filter, worn injectors, towing trailers, car full of unecessary items..tool boxes etc..brakes binding.. my advice is to check those items, add some injector cleaner to the tank check for excessive smoking and get it well serviced..and im sure others will add to the list..
How and where is it normally driven and what's it like on a steady 70mph run?
The Mrs gets 24 out of her freelander diesel which is pretty bad but on a run it can get well into the 40s, if not nudge 50, so there's nothing wrong with it - its just the short journeys and driving style. It used to be a stubborn 22 though, until I sorted out the pressures which were down 5-10psi on a couple of the tyres.
The old mans E220 shows 20mpg at times but the same applies. Mine has dropped as low as 23mpg so an equivalent engined ml driven hard in a worse stop/start environment could easily show 15 I'd imagine.
15 on normal running however and yes - start with the standard things like air filter, tyre pressures etc .
