Hello,

Hopefully someone will be able to help me on this,

My 2003 ML has just failed its mot on a fractured rear coil spring ive contacted MB who informs me this will cost £263 plus vat for the part and they recommend i replace both of them.

Can these be obtained slightly cheaper?
Ive also been informed you need specialist equipment to fit these,

I just wanted to check the info i have been given is correct & they havnt just sensed im a clueless female!!

thanks

As far as i'm aware, the replacement springs for ML's come as a complete spring/shock absorber unit, there are alternative individual parts available by specialist suspension component suppliers such as Bilstien, etc and that is where the specialist tools are required to strip/rebuild the unit.

Otherwise, fitting a complete unit to the car is a straightforward job.

I expect the £263 you were quoted is for the complete unit (ie....spring and shocker unit)

Item #100 is the s/a unit in the link below....

Give these people a call, they are usually quite competitive......

Unless your shocker units are worn out, I would look at sourcing a set of springs from a spring manufacturer. No idea who does it in England but I'm sure they would be available. Save considerable money. Re changing the springs, the only "specialist" tool required is a spring compressor to remove the spring from the shocker unit - most garages would have same.
The removal of the shock unit requires removal of the spare wheel and carrier to enable access the top retaining bolts on the suspension unit. Have done it many times as I played with my rear suspension trying to get it right. About 1 hours work, each side, for someone who knows what they are doing.
If you choose to change the shockers, I'd reccommend you install Bilstein - much better units than the originals.
