I have this intermittent problem with the gear shifter on my 2000 ML, when the car is completely cold the gear selector works fine and I can put the car into drive ok whilst pressing the brake peddle. When the car is warm then the gate won't release sometimes and I have to resort to using a pen in the quick release hole.
Also this only appears to happen during the winter months, as last winter the behavior started, then it went away all summer without a murmer, but alas has just returned on cue this October!
Any ideast to what could cause this tempramental behaviour - Mercedes say suspect gear selector module, but at £230 I'd rather look at alternatives first. Maybe a dirty joint or switch as the mechanism seems to work fine when cold??
