Hi can anyone help please My 2001 ML430 has just gone into emergency mode on the auto (i can only get 2nd and rev) I have tried to locate the auto dipstick to check the oil level but cannot find one, i have found what looks like one but it has a square top which seems to be locked also i have noticed under the car that the auto gearbox sump has oil over it indicating i have a leak but there are no drops on the driveway so the leak cant be to big. any ideas where this leak could be coming from and how i can resolve the limp mode without having to go to a main dealer would be a great help. I am fairly good at DIY maintainance so would be willing to try and repair this myself if it is not to difficult

usual place for leaking is the multiplug connector, 2 rubber o rings.

you need a correct dipstick to check oil level.

usual symptoms of low oil is slippage in gears at first, jumping out of gear and just revving.

id suggest you get level checked and fault codes read asap,

Thanks for this - is the rubber o rings something i could do myself and if so where can i locate the multiplug connecter, yesterday when i was in the car i thought at one point it seemed to be revving a bit more during acceleration so sounds like the oil level may be low. I have a local merc specialist so could call there tomorrow and get the oil checked

you could do this yourself, on the offside front of the gearbox is an electrical connector plug, you pull down on the tab to remove the electric connector. inside is a 7mm bolt, a 7mm socket with extension is required, remove this then the plug is removeable. the new plug is about £10, the new plug has the 7mm bolt integral, make sure the 2 o rings have been removed. refit dont tighten too much as it strips thread in electric pack. then plug connector back on, id recommend changing oil and filter also if it has been slipping clutches. good luck
