ML Autobox reverse problem

Hello all,

New boy here, just bought a 2001 ML 270, light salvage needs a couple of doors.

At the moment I can't get it to shift into reverse with the engine running? It will go in when the engine is stopped.

Some of the electrics have been played with, could this be the problem. I plugged the low range button back in and it then allowed me to engage D.

All help appreciated.

Hello and welcome to the forum.

Your gear shift, ignition switch and steering are all electronic known as DAS

Even the brake light switch being faulty can stop the gear shift moving

I hope it wasn't flood damaged salvage ?.....

As television said, a faulty brake light switch could cause the selector not to move but if, as you say, 'the electrics have been played with' that tells me that there are more problems on the horizon.

Better news

Good news, it goes in reverse and park now, all I need to do is apply the parking brake. Is this how they all work?

Light accidient damage not flood, wouldn't touch one.

The centre of the dash has been pulled out and all the sitches were disconnected, seems much happier now.
