Hello all

I am thinking of changing my 8 year old 202 C180. It has served me faultlessly in almost 6 years of ownership but I want a newer, bigger car (growing family etc...). I have shortlisted these 3 cars and just want a general feel of what you guys think of each either having driven, owned or just looked at them.

I have a bias for the Mercedes as I currently own two (W202 C180, W211 E320cdi) and I think they are great cars. I won't be buying new and don't really do more than 10-14K miles per annum so don't know if getting a diesel will pay me (Porsche don't do diesels).

With the current economic climate I think there are quite a few good deals to be had on a nice big gas guzzler (apologies to the green brigade!).

Hi jusy had a wizz round the web found this thread

http://www.germanautoforums.com/m_24270/tm.htm

"Hello, I have just bought 2006 Cayenne v6 3.2. Theoretically its the most economical Cayenne of all! I think Fuel consumption it too high urban 18-20 liters per 100 kilometers and extra urban 11 liters! Is it normal? Computer shows 14 liters combined but its not real!
If its okay how much than consumes Turbo or v8 4.5???
Maybe there are some things to do about it to change this terrible consumption?"

I think this equates to high urban 15.89 mpg & extra urban 25 mpg
Computer shows 20.13 mpg combined but its not real! (I like that bit)
I might have got this wrong
this is just to get your thread going

Why not if you can, its nice having that power under your foot, prices will go on falling now until the new year what ever happens, so some very good deals to be had

We had a Porsche Cayenne 3.2 and it was awful. Seriously gutless and liked a drink, even though it had an engine which was too small for it. The one we had was an ex-demo and every exra on it, so looked stunning but lost a fortune on it. Tyres seem to go every 6-8000 miles and we heard that from other people and with 20" wheels - not cheap.

The seats were not comfortable, not much room inside given the size of the car and the rear wiper kept failing. Oh and the first "small" service with the main dealer was£1200!!!

However, it did make a great noise ;)

I agree, will probably purchase at the end of December when they really need to shift stock.

WRT the Cayenne, MPG won't bother me too much - my main worry is reliability. I read Porsche only give a 2 year warranty (stingy). I have also read a lot about the tyres and costs and I am looking for a Cayenne S! Depreciation for me won't be as bad as I am looking to buy at 18+ months old, but is it the type of car you want to keep for 6+ years as I would do with my mercs?

With the Range Rover Sport, reliability is also one of my big worries, Land Rovers are not exactly strong on that. The TDV8 looks tempting but don't know if the earlier BMW engines are better than the newer Jaguar ones.

If I get the ML, it will be the 320cdi, 350 or if I can find it, a 420cdi. For me, Merc is a known entity but don't want to keep kicking myself anytime a Cayenne S drives past me. In the same vein don't want to be kicking myself when several MLs drive past me on the way to the Porsche dealer for more repairs at £1200 a pop!

Mate has a RRS TDV8 and loves it. Quite fast, sounds great for a diesel and does up to 30 mpg. Quite small in the back though and I'm a shortarse. Reliabilitywise - after 3 days from new the parking brake came on by itself on the motorway. Apart from that he has not had any issues. Do it properly though and get the 4.2 S/C if you don't care about the fuel.

Try BMW's last gen X5. 3 litre petrol one is lovely, 4.4i is thristy and fast but not as smooth an egine or agile a car. Interior is a notch above cayenne and less plasticy than an ML, although a 164 will probably be as good to drive but more comfy etc.
