ML Discs and pads.

Its getting very close to the time that the rear discs and pads on the ML need replacing with new.
Can you tell me how easy it is to do, and where is the best place to get the bits, I beleive Mintex are the best as I would like to avoid MB prices and keep more of the paper stuff in my pocket at the moment.
Any help would be very much appreciated, its purely a confidence thing, building live steam miniature steam locomotives is no problem, working on a car like a Merc is a bit off putting when you are not fully sure what you are doing

Thanks for this, forgot to mention that my calipers say AMG on them, the discs are the sold ones and not the ones drilled so I wounder if the standard pads will fit.

Just take care with the diameter and the thickness fo the new disc, your parts supplier will have a catalouge for the correct pads. If you want the run down for removal,just ask.

Once again thank you for your help, I would appriciate the run down for removal if this is not trouble to you.
I think the discs are standard size, I think the previous owner had the AMG calipers fitted when he had the AMG alloys fitted.

Jack car remove road wheel. car can be in park but no handbrake on so take care when working.

First you turn the disc/drum, and with a torch look through the access hole and by turning the disc till the adjuster hole lines up with the adjuster,this I think is in the center axis towards the rear. With a large screwdriver,back this off anti clockwise a few notches.

To remove the pads take out the bungs from the pad fixing pins and wind out the 2 pins 170 (7mm Hex key) and with draw the pads, if they are tight use a screwdriver to lever them out,if too tight put screwdriver between the pad and the disc to force the piston in,the pad will then clear the ridge on the disc.

Undo and remove the 2 calliper fixing bolts 260. you will need some thing to rest the calliper on as it must not hang on the flexible pipe.

Remove the retaing screw 250 and the disc is now free to come off,a tap with a mallet will free it. if it sticks,back off the adjuster more.

Do not disturb the parking brake linnings or knock them off center.

Put the new disc on and assemble in the reverse order using a little locking compound on the bolts 260.

Remove the filler cap on the brake resivour, as you push the pistons back the tank will fill up,remove some if there is a danger of overflowing.

One of the best things to push back the pistons with is a large pair of insulated pliers and use them backwards with the handles in the caliper to force the pistons back.

If the pads are too tight,file off the paint on the edges, do apply some of the correct grease to the rear and edges of the pads and slide them in. Re fit the pins and bungs.

Re locate the adjusting screw for the paking brake,and turn clockwise till the disc is locked then back off till it turns easily,a slight rubbing noise is OK as they are for the best part self adjusting.

Re fit road wheel and press the brake pedal to set the pads to the disc..

Thats it I think.

PS, I did this once for my friends gold plated 280SL he was in a hurry and drove off at speed,as the brake had not been pushed to take up the slack he had no brakes,he took off over the flower beds onto the lawn below. How I got him out of the garden is another story.

Hi all.... am a relatively new 51 ML500 owner and just been told that I need new rear brake pads ...quoted £245 just for the pads from merc dealer so found this thread interesting....especially as this beast is petrol and am considering (very seriously) lpg conversion....
Have done a few diy jobs myself on an old volvo that I owned before....(and would still defend to death)...but this ML is the dogs......
However am a bit scared with it being brakes....is it really that simple?
Or do you know some good mechanics in merseyside/lancashire area?

If you are only changing the pads an indie cost would be around £80.

Simple to do, just remove the pins,push the pistons back,slip in new pads and replace pins=== Done

If you google - brake pad replacement, brake disk replacemt etc etc. there are 100's of pages on the subject with pictures awell!!

if you can change a fuse in a plug, then you can work brake pads and disks!

If you research hard enough you will always find what you are after :)

So...also with respect... this site is a forum and I expected it would be full of enthusiasts therefore I find it hard to comprehend why there is a "technical forum" if the advice is go and look elsewhere on the internet...or get a haynes manual!!! Surely its about been there, done that, got the t-shirt.... therfore I'll help fellow enthusiasts.....
A bit disappointed at the subsequent posts when after all as a newbie it would have been nice to get more encouragement from the senior members or do you have problems......

Very well said, If I wanted to spend a great deal more time searching on the net then I would have, why spend all this time when a quick question on here will get the same results, if not better in a fraction of the time.

It does not take very long to write out, and no research required, always have to be carefull as some MB's have rear pads that are held the same as the front with the 2 pins.

When we get our DIY section a detailed list could be put up with the differences.

Malcolm is a goldmine of information, and he is amazingly generous with it.
However, even he didn't disclose the location of the flower bed where all that gold plate was scraped off!
