Hi again, got in my ML this morning and the door mirrors were misted up with dew, put on the rear window demister but the mirrors did not clear. Got home and read the handbook which says that the mirrors will automaticly clear when the temp is low enough. Well the temp wasn't that low but dew was a problem, there I was with a fairly expensive motor at the side of the road wiping my mirrors with tissue paper. Is this normal and if so can a bypass be fitted up some how? Does anyone else think this is poor, low temps quite clearly are not always the cause of mirror fogging.

The same thing happens when it is raining in 'summer'. It is frustrating - but excellent when it drops to 8 degrees C - then the heated thingy wotsit kicks in. As far as I know, putting the rear screen on, doesn't put the heated door mirrors on. I am as interested as you to see if The Wise One's have an answer.

Yes very true, my poor old ML is dead against heating me or itself up it seams. Having a bit of a ding dong with MB at the moment due to the heated seat on the drivers side deciding to burn its way through the seat cover, "never heard of that one before" they say, but this forum and others say otherwise.

Do you know about the auto heater boost? I don't have a problem with getting the car warm. The only issue I have, are heated seats.!! NEVER use them - NEVER found the need. But thats just me.

Have to say the heated seats are not used much as yet on my bus,

however if you have ever had a convertible one of the best options if you like all year round roof down driving :)

Is that simply because the lowering mechanism has broken, and the owner wants to look  ??

Removed the diesel preheater from my freelander before I sold that and intend to fit it to the ML before too long. Found that to be one of the best bits of kit yet fitted to my cars. set the timer for 15 mins before you usualy get in you car and when you do get in, lovely and warm interior and the engine already up to working temp. Bit of a fuss to fit, but well worth it

The interior heater has one fitted as standard..!! As for the engine, I find that it warms up as quickly as my Jags did.

Thanks for the tips Jez, will test times in the morning. Just the mirror heaters then, love to know if I could bypass the sensor that tells them to turn on. Seems silly that my £500 13 year old peugeot is good enough to allow me to decide when to turn on my mirror heaters but not a £30000.00 merc. An automation too far

What a load of cobblers. This has been very common, I bet it burn your right cheek:shock::shock:, although not seen one for 2-3 years now. I thought they had all been fixed;)

No, not mine, previous owner full MB history and I had it just under 4 weeks, poof, rear of right bolster almost on fire literaly smoking and MB not in the least interested, "in this instance not qualifying for good will repairs". I have had all sorts of bangers to new cars over the years and this is the first that tried to set fire to us. Got to save up now to repair it. Big dollar!!!
Anybody want to suplly me with the parts at trade prices.????

I am not familiar with your car but just for comparison, on my C180 for example there is a thermostat inside the back of the mirror, touching the glass. When the temperature drops below approximately 15c the mirror’s heat up in less than a minute after the ignition is switched on.

When the glass becomes hot enough the thermostat switches them off, this cycle is repeated as I drive along provided the temperature of the glass is below 15c. So my mirrors are receiving power all the time when the ignition is on and it is the thermostat that switches them on and off as the temperature varies.

I think yours should work in a similar fashion, as it is a MB. Try chilling the mirror with water from a garden hose for at least 5 minutes, then turn on ignition, you should feel definite heat after approximately 60 seconds on the back of your fingers as you touch the glass. This will at least tell you that you have a fault OR maybe you are not operating the controls correctly i.e. something else has to be switched on first.
