ML Red Boot Sensor/Cover

Hi,

I was wondering what the red cover is on my ML boot lid is, it is where the switch would be if I had the motorised tail gate.

It looks like a sensor, someone has pullet it loose as the cover partially comes off. Behind it a PCB.

Any ideas on its purpose?
