ML Tailgate problems : it keeps opening :-(

Does anyone have a suggestion to a tailgate issue please? When closing the boot (using any method), the lid lowers and before closing completely and engaging the lock, it comes back up a little as though it has hit a bump-stop/obstruction, and then stops in that mid-way position.
This happens for any random amount of attempts before it will finally close, no pattern has emerged. It can be forced to close manually.

The car is an ML, and we had this issue with a previous ML but chose to live with it.

Any guidance would be greatly appreciated, I wondered if there a microswitch that may be sticking, a sensor that may be out of range, a stopping point that requires adjustment?

I'll be playing with this on Monday when I have the time so can post the diagnosis otherwise.

Check for water under the spare wheel well where the motor & pump sits.Mine was doing the same kind of thing yours is and the connectors on the motor were corroded.Cut the wires back,cleaned up the terminals and it seems to still be playing ball.
I also had to change the light seals.
