2001 ML's wiper just packed in. It was occasionally sticking if the screen wasn't wet enough but tonight after a 2 hour drive home it packed in completely about 1 mile from the house ... its completely jammed, where before a nudge would get it going again.

It only ever jammed when i switched it onto intermittent or if i was switching between speeds.

A quick search has highlighted fuses and greasing the motor which i will check in the morning, just wondering if there are any other avenues to pursue.

If the motor or any of the driveline to the blade have been under lubricated the current drawn by the wipers could have taken out the fuse, if replacing this sorts it out you realy should take some time to ensure that all the parts of the motor and drive are well lubricated or it will happen again. If the problem has been persisting for some time the excessive current will have caused premature wear of the motors commutator and brushes this will shorten the life of the motor, new brushes if you can get them might cure it but a replacement motor may be required.

I have known wipers on various models to stick because of the shaft on which the blade is mounted has been tilted due to loose or worn mountings, make sure yours is sitting square to the glass.

Your symptoms sound very much like striped gears inside motor, you could check out all other suggestions first and if there is no improvement then have a look at post #17 here, not your motor but same idea.

Well I had no time to fix myself, so put into independent who managed to get at the wiper motor after a struggle. He reckons new motor required, which is only £140 from merc. Had a quick look on parts gateway for a second hand part but so far best quote was over £100 anyway. The labour will be the killer, as he reckons 3 hours given how much time was spent getting at it in the first place. Easy come, easy go... money... who needs it?

Hi same thing happened to me rear wiper packed in
I couldn't get it going at all, not even with assistance from myself IE pulling pushing when button was pressed.
I thought it would need a strip down so I had a quick look & it was difficult to get at so I left it, good job because it working OK now
don't ask me why, thats about 2 months ago
