I have recently purchaced a 2002 ML270 facelift model with 94000mls on the clock with full service the problem i have got is that i am getting vibration throught the drivers seat when moving off ? are there any problems with the gearboxes? or is it something else, the independent garage i had to look at it are at a loss as to what it could be? any advice would be most helpfull. is it normal?.

Also how do you check the automatic gearbox oil level and top up if required as it appeares to be sealed?.:-(

Hello and welcome. there better ML people on here than me, but your gearbox that was sealed for life from the factory have different rules now. That is the fluid should now be changed at 40k miles.. most people that do this, say that the changes are much smoother.

Re the engine could be early signs of the MAF going down,or could be a sticky EGR valve that affects low revs and idle.

Not sure if it applies to this model but a fault that crops up occasionaly on the forum is for the gearbox oil cooler to start leaking which allows the engine coolant to mix with the gearbox oil. This is usually only noticed when the vibrations start by which time it's too late for the gearbox. It could be worth checking the gearbox oil for coolant contamination.

The ML has a seperate gearbox cooler which is nowhere near the coolant, so you can discount that one. Propshaft centre bearing could give a vibration if really bad. Have you got a whining from the middle of the car at moderate speeds? (Discount any teenagers who may be seated in the back!!)

Gearbox level needs a dipstick to check. The car does not come with one. Find a good specialist in your area.

Sounds to me like the common bogey with ML270's - your engine mounts are stuffed, allowing vibration through to the body. A change of mounts and all will be well.
I changed my auto oil and filter the other day at 55000km - 32000 miles. I do a lot of towing in hot conditions. I was only able to change 3½ litres as the torque converter is sealed. There was some sludge in the sump and the oil was blackened somewhat, but did not smell burnt. The box seems to be changing more smoothly since the change.
Would suggest an oil change would be overdue at your mileage.

Vibrations from the driver's seat usually come form the propshaft coupling. There is one at the front and one at the back. They cost about £50 and last about 100,000 miles. Get a back wheel up parking brake off and see if there is any play between the propshaft and the transmission.

Normally you will get the vibration coming in and getting worse as you hit a certain speed, you can't drive through it like a wheel balance problem.

Not having the time, I got an Austrian dealer to change my engine mountings, but after inspection, he said there was nothing wrong with them. As the vibration I feel is only when the engine is on load at certain rev ranges and after looking at injectors, to me my problem can only be the engine mountings have gone hard, rather than broken. Does your vibration disappear if you take your foot of the accelerator? Does it appear approx 1/3-1/2 throttle position when engine is on load? If so, same problem as me.

The other chestnut is the Transfer Case which on early models gave problems. Have no clue as to the diagnosis on this one though.

I dont think your looking at a gearbox/transmission problem here, its more likely a drive train problem and with the ML it does have drive shaft coupling problems. As for the Trans oil level (its been sealed for the last three years) you can remove the cap by pushing down on the little plastic clip inside the cap, however you will have to buy the dipstic, check out the other transmission threads on this forum and you will understand. If it needs a top up you will have to feed the ATF in through the dipstic.

Thanks for the advise! I was worred about the oil/water in the gearbox thing£££££. there's no odd noises other than the exaust which has a raspin sound (suspect baffles) the vibration makes your but tingle for a couple of seconds! then goes just before it hit's 2000rpm, could it be the exaust?.
