Hi, Have a problem with an ML270 Auto (2000) , self inflicted I think !!

Battery went flat on car, needed to move it urgently & couldn't move gear
lever from park (assume it needs power) - needed to move urgently (wife insisted!) so towed it approx 6ft (still in park handbrake off)

I realise this was stupid but it was urgent. - However the car will not go into
gear - if i start engine the lever will move through the different positions but it will not engage any gears, it seems to try to move if i rev the engine, but this could just me my imagination. - with engine running if i try to move back to park there is a grinding noise .

Any one go any idea's ? - does something need resetting, do i need to drop the gearbox sump & reset/replace something or do i need a new box ?

See if you can check the oil in the gearbox. There may or may not be a dip stick.

I know it's not an answer to your problem - but what on earth did you tow it WITH.?

I wonder if moving the car whilst in park has sheared the transmission locking pawl within the gearbox?.....did the wheels rotate when you towed it or did they 'drag', if they rotated then the pawl must have sheared.

I believe their is a special switch on the interior lighting for towing,
What about that?

Just as a matter of interest one way of getting a stuck lever out of P when engine wont start is to pull firmly on the lever and hit the gearlever a sharp tap with a wooden or rubber mallet .. some models do have a release button...
And towing a vehicle in P without using wheel skates is a big no no.. probably would have been cheaper to throw it on its side and tow it ?????????

if there is a nosie from the box then it needs to be removed/striped it will be able to be repaired
