Dear All,

I have a 02 270 CDI, at the moment it's not getting a lot of use, but it looks like last week I may have left the stalk on P ( parking lights) which flattened the battery. I charged it and the next morning no worries. However the charge has only lasted a few days and yesterday it was nearly flat again. I took it to get battery / alt checked and all is well, the only thing i leave plugged on via cigar socket is my road angel.........I would not have thought this could take enough battery to flatten it??? I have checked the obvious light switches etc, any one got any ideas??

Thanks Staffs

Maybe one of the cells has gone due to the initial flattening.Get the battery tested, any motor stores has one of these testers as they cant wait to flog you a new one.The colder weather tips some batteries just over the top and need relacing after the warmer weather.

Yes cells do go down and even high resistance if the battery is 4 years or more then it could be time to replace it.

If you have a milliamp meter then you could measure the flow when parked up.

As skilledhandz says shops and outlets can test, but they are not always honest, a Lucas service center would be OK

If you buy a new one get a good brand and not a house name

Bosch,Banner,Varta,Exide,Lucus are all good

Thanks for your responce, I got the battery checked and it was holding its own. The alternator was also working fine. I just wonder if leaving the road angel on is taking it down?

Battery checks are not very reliable. I had to replace mine in my 2003 ML270 after it was very hesitant to start a couple of times. Took the car to Mercedes, as it was under warranty, and they said it was OK. Took it to a reputable car electrics place and they confirmed the diagnosis. Three days later the car refused to turn over the engine!!! Had to charge battery to enable a start. Took it back to Mercedes and they agreed to replace the battery - no more problems.

This is where many testers fail. with one cell high resistance when charged it reads and test ok 3 days later totally dead

Key 1?? if you are referring to the ignition position then I have this road angel plugged into the aux power socket under the glove box, so it is on all the time......???

Ok, then this could be causing you the problems, I do not know the construction of this power supply (road angel) but it could be quite high depending on the stabilization

Begs the question....does your battery still lose its charge with the Road Angel unplugged?

You know ML's better than me, and I do not know of this socket, not that it changes the principle

I was thinking of the stabilization of the power supply, some of them draw current even if the head unit is turned off

I have had it plugged in for the last 2 months or so and its been fine. However the battery went down initially because i left the park lights on. I then charged it up over night and it lastes 2 days and went down again. Since then I have charged it driven it and pulled out the road angel plug at night and this morning no problem...........

The car has not been getting much use of late so maybe the initial recharge did not charge it right back up? Battery and alt came out OK but maybe this is the starting sign the battery is on its way..........

The socket in question is a permanently 'live' 12v supply, it is live even with the key removed......unlike the cigarette lighter sockets which are switched.

I have TomTom plugged into the front Aux power output 24/7 - with no problems. Albeit that the unit itself, isn't left on display, but the plug is never removed.

I suspect the battery is past its sell by date.........just renewed mine, the original lasted just over six years!

Yes it is still live!! I cannot believe it will take enough power to discharge the battery in a few days thought..... As I said maybe the initial charge was not enough but I will see how it is over the next few days and if it goes again i think i will just replace the battery.

Well that explains your choice in motor cars, sadly I do not have the Command maps for Spain, and the OAP will not stretch to it this year:( I will give it some thought next year :)
