Hello

Probably a faulty glow-plug. If the ML systems works like the C system then the cycle goes something like this:

Ignition on starts pre-heat
Light goes off to signal end of pre-heat
Start engine
Glow-plug control module initiates after-heat (to improve post start running) for up to three minutes
Glow-plug control signals faulty plug by keeping light on during after-heat

You can confirm by checking wth a basic multi-meter.

See thread here: http://forums.mercedesclub.org.uk/showthread.php?t=29073&highlight=c220+glow

Best wishes

David

(I've only ever sat in an ML once, but this sounds so like the other glow-plug problems that ever read about that I'm venturing a guess!)

Precisely the same symptons that my ML displayed...........It was one of the glowplugs that had failed, i renewed all of them and have kept the old 'good' ones as spares.

From memory....they are about £12 each from MB and easy to renew.

Stockists for Beru Glow plugs

The GSF branches are found here - http://www.gsfcarparts.com/contact/branches.asp

Mercedes spares price for these same parts (with the MB logo and additional part number on them) is £13.77 +VAT. Roughly double the OEM part cost.
You may find it easier to source these locally once you know exactly what you require which is Beru GN003 type.

I have also posted a reply with useful links on the other thread by the way :)
Best of luck anyway, it's no harder than changing spark plugs I found.
