Dear all,

I appreciate their has been some threads regarding stiff throttle cables on the ML 270 but I would appreciate a bit more assistance please.

I replaced the cable at a Merc specialists last week before we went on holiday. The replacement cable has made no imporvement what so ever it is still stiff and annoying especially in traffic.

I do notice howeverr that the pedal itself has some sidewards movement in it and I wonder if this maybe contributing to the problem.........

I would appreciate any help.

Cheers all

Lubricate the plastic pin that the pedal pivots on.

If a new cable and the lubrication does not improve things there is not much you can do. Its a characteristic of the mechanism.

It is cr4p, I know but I have yet to find a solution as have dealers. It seems to be somthing that you will have to get used to.

Thanks for your quick responce, I sat in a different ML last week and the pedal certainly felt smoother. A complete pedal is £15 from MB so i think I will replace the pedal and see if that improves the situation. Not sure if I should be having this sidewards play in the pedal so maybe the plastic pin etc is worn.........

Cheers

Throttle problem still here

I have now replaced the whole throttle pedal as there was some sidewards play in the linkage...........still the same st just feels bity, its very ahrd to just smoothly let the throttle out.

There are 2 springs on the control box, one is quite a size I wonder if this was swapped bu a slightly smaller spring it may ease the problem.........

I would appreciate any assistance as always.

Regards

Darren

I tried taling one of the springs off on mine just to see if it made any difference as I had seen it reported previously, made the pedal very soft and I did not like the feel so put the spring back, if mine becomes a problem I would purchase a new accelerator cable, hang it in the garage and drip oil down the centre wire for a couple of days (that was how we did mootrbike cables when we were younger) and when refitting the cable looking for a new route obviously with no sharp bends or kinks in it, should do the trick.

So open the bonnet and look at the bulkhead. That's where the other end of the throttle cable is and it is governed by a spring. It's at the back, just right of centre and if you can't find it, get someone to move the pedal whilst you go looking about.

Well that's what I did and the first thing I noticed is that the spring is dirty. Not loose dirt, something is rubbing it. So I look at the bonnet soundproofing and it is wearing away where the two are rubbing against each other. Has anyone noticed this before? Could be the reason why things are going wrong. I shall investigate further.

I wrote quite a thread on this some time ago. My observations then are still the same. My modified cable has now done another 50000km with absolutely no trouble and very smooth. This is the only fix that really works. I reckon I tried them all. Even my MB dealer agreed that the result was outstanding and much better than they have been able to achieve with new cables etc. See my website for details http://members.optusnet.com.au/iananddesley/

Any competent speed shop can make up the cable for you. Quite easy to fit.

Ah-ha!

I have fixed it! On the end of the throttle, under the bonnet, is a return spring. It seems to add a bit of tension to the throttle cable. Take that spring off and throw it away.

Everything is fine now...

Sorry oigle, but we don't a 'speed shop' here in blighty. Don't know what one is!

Keep well

Would it not be better David to fit a weaker spring,,if the cable failed, the throttle ass; needs something to keep the throttle closed

Thats exactly what i did with mine a few years ago and posted on these threads at the time............made all the difference in removing the 'notchiness' and also made the pedal 'lighter'
The potentiometer has its own return spring built in so there are no safety issues.

Glad you have found a remedy. I tried all that stuff - many different springs and tension settings and removing same etc and was never happy. Throttle became too light too and bounced around under my foot when on roughish roads. Think you might find your fix not working too well after a while.

Re "speed shop" - I was referring to any workshop that gets involved in racing/rallying etc where different carburettors etc., like Webers for example, are used and cables have to be made up to suit. The use of a suitable uncoated inner in the original outer works very well. Just need to get someone to provide the new inner and the necessary ends for the cable - pretty standard stuff for those workshops.

........."Throttle became too light too and bounced around under my foot when on roughish roads. Think you might find your fix not working too well after a while.".......

I've had the spring removed for circa 3 years now and have never experienced my foot bouncing around on the pedal..............and some of the tracks here in spain are as rough as any the average motorist will ever come across, particularly the one leading to my villa. I soon got used to the 'softer' feel and actually prefer it now.

Fair enough. Guess cars and people are all different. I may have had a particularly difficult one for some reason or maybe I'm too fussy !!
