Can anyone help? The low range warning light has started flashing upon start up. I am now unable to select low range at all. Does anybody have any idea what this could be?
It is the w163 model, 2001. Any help much appreciated.

the transfer case motors can pack up on the 163, check the plug to it and if all looks ok, a new motor is properly reqiured.

As previously mentioned, the electric motors do fail and cause the light to flash, as mine did.....the motor is dead easy to replace, you can even reach it without jacking up the vehicle, just undo the three securing bolts, slide the motor off the centre spindle and refit the new one......nothing needs to be reset, etc

Same answer as my previous post...you need a new motor.

You know when you are in low range when the low range lamp stays illuminated (not flashing)

When i stripped my non-working low range motor it was full of water and rusted up beyond repair!

Hi you need to be in nutral when you press the button (it says this under the lid / armrest) you should feel a thud / clunk when it engages then the light on the dash will show for low range all the time you are in low range, when you drive you will know your in low range 30 mph top speed

Hi Kevin, Good point!.......My post was on the assumption that the questioner was familiar with the procedure for selecting low range.

I just tried mine got the flashing light on the dash and then no light then remembered as I was messing with the window switch, that it said about nutral under the arm rest

Thanks to all posters I now realise my New investment is perfect I did know about the nutral thing problem solved !!

The change from low range to high range and visa-versa can only be performed when the vehicle is stationary (and in neutral).

Mine did the same when my motor packed in, i dont know the cost of a new motor as i obtained a used one but fitting is dead easy, just unplug the electric connector, undo the bolts and slide the motor off the spindle.......plug and play..no resets necessary and you dont even need to jack the car up.

My old motor had somehow filled up with water and was full of rust!!!

Well it appears to have gone away for the minute ... once i was back from holiday i pressed the button, and after a little thunk it went into low range. After a short drive it came out ok, and the light doesn't flash anymore.
