(ML270 W163) Can someone identify this (vent) hole where engine coolant is pouring out of

I had to bleed the engine coolant and now have refilled it. When the engine starts, a lot of coolant comes out of this hole. Sadly, I am having problems getting the engine started with fuel from the tank and can only start it with fuel fro a jar so the engine only starts for a few seconds but in that time, a lot of coolant comes out.

The hole is to the left of the oil filter (circled red in the first photo) and the second photo is a close up of it.

Due to not being able to start the engine for a long period of time, and thus unable to get the heating system on to help bleed the coolant system, I was wondering if the coolant couldn't circulate properly and thus leaving via this exit hole. But I honestly have no idea.

Any info would be appreciated

There should be a small tube that goes between that hole and the underside of the thermostat. You appear to have lost it

Oh that's amazing, thank you. That side of the engine was absolutely thick with diesel due to blocked air intake manifold and I actually saw that tube while giving it a clean (it was loose and lying flat somewhere - clearly I had knocked it without noticing). I do believe (I do hope lol) I have kept it in my tool box. Otherwise, thanks for the link.
