I hope someone can help me with this
I have a ML270cdi w163 2002 , I’ve had the dreaded P1189 fault code and the car is currently in limp mode.
ive got the resistors to do the swirl flap plug mod but I can’t find the plug in the engine to fit the resistor

I’m a real knob when it comes to cars so please don’t judge me too harshly or laugh too much . Question is am I supposed to be undoing the hoses on the left as I look in ( MAF sensor etc ) or the right as I’ve already done ? I’ve looked and can’t see anything resembling the plug.

if anyone can help or even better still , post a photo of where I need to be looking I’d really appreciate it honest .

thank you .

mark .

if u can't find via that link - remembering it seems one type had the swirl flap motor at the opposite end (hence both drawings)

https://nemigaparts.com/cat_spares/epc/mercedes/1/m/612963/21t/14/030/?chasis=16311306H part 29

use youtube to show u where the swirlflap motor is …. then find the connector on the car end of the wires….. don't damage the car but likely you'll need to bend the tails on the resistors to get a good fit, once it works insulate it up to help keep them in place

Thanks mate but I can’t make head nor tail of that diagram and YouTube only showing the 320cdi engine - looks different to mine. Can you look at my photos and give me an idea if I’m near to it ? Cheers

I don't have one, the righthand side picture (left of car) is the part shown at the top of the drawing..... if you take another picture or go on a site to decode the chassis number …. https://www.lastvin.com/ you should be able to see it its a 203, 209 or 210 which from the naff drawing looks as if its at the back of the engine bay. The others would have at the front near the big hose you have taken off

55 seconds in u see the "servo motor" (aka swirl flap motor), as u can see its not necessarily a case of just the resistor - if its as bad as his, will need surgery

DON'T go rummaging about under the manifold whilst wearing a watch or wedding rings etc. .... if these touch wiring of the starter they might end up chopping off you hand due to severe burn injuries after a few months of agony

As far as I know it’s a ten minute job if you know where the plug is located - undo hoses , fit the plug and away you go . People on here have done the bypass mod

watch the first video YES the resistor will fix a broken motor.... but if its as worn as his all the boost pressure will vanish and eventually the bits fall off and destroy the engine as it ingests them, if you can't work it out from the parts drawing and two video's go find some to help

Mate I appreciate what you’re saying - fitting the resistor is the first thing I need to try . The videos are no good , neither of them are showing the location of the plug in the engine, the guy has the whole thing removed . Don’t worry about it I’ll wait for someone who has done the fix to point me in the right direction of where to find the plug thanks

Hi, deleting the swirl flap actuator motor is pointless unless you are going to delete the swirl flaps as well.

Lots of people have done the mod without issue mate . If you’re offering to help me by telling me how to find the plug I need then feel free .

The swirl flap motor sits directly under the inlet manifold and is impossible to access from the engine bay. Jack the car up remove the ns front wheel and wheel arch liner, you can get to it (just) this way.

Are you sure this is correct ? I only say this because the 320cdi engine is accessed through the engine bay after undoing a couple of hoses . I didn’t think it would be that much different on mine ? Thanks

I would use the technique of looking for the engine harness.
Then follow the harness to the plug.

Information given is correct. Remove left hand front wheel, then remove Arch liner, you will see a very oil wet engine block if the flaps are leaking, the motor and linkage are under the manifold, you should be able to reach up and un plug the wiring. As far as i remember from reading other posts , it cannot be accessed from above unless the manifold is removed.
