ml320 remote problem

have owned car for one week but realised when i got home from collecting it that remote fails to lock or unlock car. previous owner had fitted multi changer fitted for me and maybe disconnected battery! would it then need re-programming? is there a reset switch somewhere? have replaced batteries but no luck. central lock switch in car is working.
someone please help so i dont get ripped off at mb.
also does it mean my car is no longer alarmed
