Sticker Price £27999
Managed to negotiate down to £27200 + £399 worth of supaguard thrown in.
Dealer refuses to go further.

I have 'reserved' it. Is this a good buy? -or should I walk away?

It has everything I want especially the comand, rear screens, and tv tuner and electric tailgate, and side steps.
I had initially planned to buy a cheaper one with just comand and get the rear entertainment at somewhere like Braybrooks and sidesteps from dealer.

Side steps alone are £800 + fitting to retrofit at MB dealer.

Opinions please???

Don't know if it's a good buy given the fact that the foreseeable future looks like people will be moving away from vehicles like that in favour of better fuel efficiency, lower emissions and cheaper road tax. Think I'd agree with St4's point about an E-class estate.

However, that said there will always be someone out there with the dosh that wants them! If I was flush enough - I'd let my heart rule my head, ignore running costs and drive a brand new gas guzzling Range Rover just for fun

If that's the vehicle you want in your heart then go for it.
I don't think you'll find many to choose between on the used car market yet, so if it's got the spec you want and in the colour you want don't wait for someone else to snap it up before you.

Enjoy

Personally I'd rather have an E class estate and that money will buy a very nice one

Problem is we already have an E class saloon. This is for the Mrs - to replace her W202 C Class -of course I'd be borrowing it once in a while ;-)....

The supaguard is a waste of money, and not really a very good bargaining tool when you consider you could do it yourself for £50 or less.

See if the dealer will take the Supaguard away from the deal - I bet you anything he won't.

Quite agree. I did my SL with "A" Glaze, a similar product, 2.5. years ago and it is still tip top.

£399 "value" perhaps, but just not worth that much money. Decline it, ask for the cash off instead.

Pretty much the spec of my car, the rear screens add a nice finishing touch.

The cars are worth it, Im well impressed with mine. I reserve judgement on reliability, Ive only just clocked over 10K and the 7G box is playing silly buggars, but apparently a software update will fix it.

A shooting brake (estate) is not every ones cup of tea, and you generally dont get 4matic in UK spec shooting brakes. One of the biggest regrets on my 270 was power, so I went for the 500 and gained a lot more in so doing (near silence), but a 320 will be more than adequate.

Bottom Line is, Car is fully spec'd and if you really really like it then dont worry about the rest and go ahead. Personal opinion is that it would be too expensive in long run and i wouldnt buy one but we are all different and have our own likes and dislikes

You will find the sales team will not want to drop the Supaguard - there's £70ish commission in it for them!

They must really love me then. At my last acquisition I declined finance, gap insurance and Supagard! Wonder how much commission that adds up to?

Fabulous spec. Memory seats are a great bonus IMO. I had the previous ML the 270cdi and loved it. Roomy, practical, and incredibly comfortable on a long run. And sitting up high is great when cruising. Have driven the current ML and it is a big improvement, especially in the ride, compared with the one I had.

I now have an E estate and like that very much too. Both are good.

Good way to check asking prices at other dealers is to go on the MB website and use the approved-used search engine.

What makes you say that - is it the extra spec or the fact that it is an ML or a 320?

Yes, they offered to sell over £1500 worth of extra 'insurance and stuff like supaguard'. They threw in the supaguard when I refused to budge without an extra discount - I generally was hoping for a bigger discount but they seem pretty confident they will sell the car easily because of the spec. I have to agree 'cos I have been looking on and off since October and this is one of the best specced ones I have seen.
That said I am just wondering if I'd be better off buying a cheaper car and then retrofitting some of the extras.

I priced up a new ML320cdi sport -with the same spec and it came to £50,200. That's about £10K worth of extra spec -how much extra should one expect to pay for that in a second hand car?

The more goodies the more to go wrong, but maintenance aside, your primary worries are VED, mpg and depreciation. Most of the kit is standard, so I couldnt see any increase in maintenance on say a E320 4matic Estate other than brake/disk usage which will be higher due to weight.

Diesel MLs are doing surprisingly well on the depreciation front compare with many large engined top VED band cars. Worth going to the Vauxhall website where under finance you can go to 'value my car' and that is Glass's Guide which shows you what it is worth at various ages. After the initial drop, the depreciation isn't too bad. And ten year old MLs still fetch good money.

The fear is that if the world economy recovers fairly rapidly, then oil prices will surge again and 4x4 prices may be hit.

Plus the govt may further clobber large engines in the top tax band.

That's life.

Erm, no! My ML270 was worth 3Grand after 8 years, hi-spec and only 195 for VED. The ML500's W164 are being snapped up as they arrive on the market (when I was searching in Dec/Jan), perhaps by foreigners. There was a glut of ML320's and they didnt see to be shifting, at lest that was my experience.

The one the original poster is after is hi-spec, not quite as hi as mine, but it sets it out from the crowd, so its worth buying. Regarding its depreciation, only time will tell, after all, its only 2 years ago I got offered 14Grand on my ML270!

Erm, yes. Can't judge from one car. Go to Glass's Guide -the trade bible. It fits the experience of a friend of mine who recently got over £19k (nearly half what you pay new with a modest discount) for a 320cdi with book miles in excellent condition. Not many big cars are giving such good residuals at present. Four year old, 2005 examples get a part ex value of £15,100 to £17,200 in part ex according to Glass's. Then there is a big drop to the older model, for which 2005 examples get about £9k-10k in part ex.

Eight years old with book miles, say around 96k miles from 2001 still get around £5k part ex value in Glass's. Not bad these days.

These are all diesel prices.

Erm! No! Glass's guide is just that, a guide. As per the old saying, its only worth something if someone is willing to buy, otherwise its valueless. I can lay hands on a lot of Bonds, toxic, they can have an intrinsic value, but would you buy?

Erm, yes. It's the best guide we've got. That's why so many dealers use it. And the various guides are really the only way we can compare residuals of different makes. What Car gives a pretty good comparison for 3 year old cars.

Erm, no! Credit Crunchie... or had you forgotten! Your example, 5K for my car, yet when I bought the Prius or the ML or when I was considering the B and the A, the trade-in was 2.5K - 3K, which is 2K under Glass's, 5-8 months later. Get the drift? Its a guide, something I would read to my children at bedtime :)
