ML350 cdi boot / trunk won't open

Hi, i've had 2009 ML350cdi for few months and the boot / trunk will not open. I can hear the motor whirl a little but it will not open. Is there a way to manually open it? any idea what needs repairing ?

On the GL, there was a manual release on the inside on the top of the boot lining - not sure if the ML has the same, but they do share a lot of stuff.

There are a few possibilities - once you have the boot open, you will need to remove the lining card and watch the mechanism operate. There is a link rod from the actuator to the boot lock, and certainly in some models, this can slip off if the retaining clip wears / breaks, but observation is the best way to diagnose.
