hey chaps.. long time since I posted here.

I'm interested if anyone has recently, say in the last year or so, successfully had Mercedes OE glass fitted to their car at their home or work..

Daimler AG say that all genuine parts should be fitted by either an Authorised Retailer (ie your main dealer), or an Independent Repairer.

I'm looking for evidence that Independent Repairers can also fit parts at locations other than their workshops. So knowing that mobile glass repairers are still fitting OE Glass would be good to know!

I've just had a repair on a small ding on my front windscreen - it is fortunately on the extreme left hand (nearside), so not that noticeable (to me, anyway). The mobile repair guy (arranged via my insurer) warned that the repair would not do anything to hide the damage, but would stop any further damage/degradation.

Under the current circumstances, I am happy with a repair, as I was concerned about getting a replacement screen, given that my MB dealership has all but disappeared.

I asked the chap about a replacement and he said that it would need to be done at their premises. He also confirmed that it would not be an OE item, but said that they were made to the same spec/quality (but obviously not with the MB "signature").

I picked up a small crack in my windscreen in the first month of owning the car. I let myself get talked into a repairer as it was outside the driver's view, so wouldn't affect MOT. Stupid mistake. It's a tiny imperfection but I've been mildly irritated by it ever since. Three years on, another small hit to the passenger side of the screen. This time I'll get a new screen. One small concern. The aerial for my lovely DAB radio is fitted to the upper near side (by Comand UK). If I get the replacement glass done during lockdown I may have to live without radio until Comand UK are open for business.

@McDonald

Can't you peel the aerial off and stick it back on?

I did that on wifes A Class, but used flat dental floss. Just remember to wash the dental floss lots of times first as its impregnated with white stuff.
Gently heated it with a hot air dryer lifted the corner with a stanley knife blade and whilst gently lifting, teased the self adhesive up. Then sawed the joint, when pulling at the same time. Ideally need 2 people for quick result.
I then bought new very thin clear adhesive tape . You would never know it was replaced.

I think that you were asking if anyone had had their screen REPLACED. Yes there are some mobile that replace with OE Glass, but a lot do not. I have had both over the years and to be honest, I could not tell the difference. The shading and sunblind shading was the same, but not OE.

My screen looks like someone was practicing sand blasting on it.. Driving into morning sun is nearly not possible as the sun refracts on the thousands of dots in the screen .
got to get it changed.. feel guilty claiming it on insurance though ?

You can polish them out, it can make it more susceptible to further damage but it’s a cheap option

Thanks John. Spoke to a Parts Supervisor at a dealer that confirmed they do supply the likes of Autoglass if the vehicle owner has requested OE glass, either directly or through their insurance.

All helps with my case

You can polish them out,
Im not sure about that.. I have polished a lot of marks out of double glazed units in years gone by using a proper glass polishing machine and jewellers rouge. Im Pretty sure using that method would lead to an uneven screen (concave dips) , possibly leading to distortion?
On the other hand i have not had a really really really close look to see what sort of depth those thousands of dots are.
Got nothing to lose by trying a small area ?
Im going to go outside now and try a close up pic !

Fail ! its so hard to take a pic of the surface of clear glass ! You cant really see the marks at all, until you drive into a low sun, then you cant Not see them. They are tiny tiny chips in the glass.
The part i never understood is how the screen is so bad but the paintwork is so good?
You can feel them, like minature craters if you run a fine needle over the screen . Has to be at least 10 dots per square cm..
