I have a year 2000 Avantgarde E240T and have previously posted on the "Rust Survey" regarding substantive rusting issues.
My car had a B service ("B Expensive"!) on 28th February 2008 at my local MB dealership in Newbury Berkshire; thereby just creeping-in within the time scale between services (200 miles and two weeks left), to maintain my Mobilo Warranty.
I pointed out to them the substantive bubbling and rusting at the two leading edges (the pointy-bits) of the bonnet and the two front wings (the pointy-bits again) either side of the radiator; the top of the bonnet; the front wheel arches and a rear wheel arch, all arches very bad. (I have subsequently noticed a few areas on the offside windscreen pillar).
My dealership immediately undertook a condition survey and the same day submitted a request to MB UK for work to be carried out under Warranty.
Within 4-5 days my dealership phoned to state that MB had approved certain work and arranged for my car to go in on Monday 10th March with a 3 day repair and courtesy car provided.
MB Germany had approved the front and rear wing repairs, but refused the bonnet as being "due to outside influences"!
I contested this as clearly the leading edge of the bonnet and certain "spidering and bubbling" on the bonnet top were NOT stone chips; where there were stone chips these were clearly identifiable as such.
I spoke to MB UK customer care and registered my "disdain" at rejection of the bonnet repairs (not stone chips). MB UK then spoke to MB Newbury to discuss the situation. MB Newbury then spoke to me and stated that they would not have put a claim forward unless they thought it was a genuine warrantable item; however the ultimate arbitor is MB Germany!
On 10th March my car went to MB Newbury to be collected by their "tame bodyshop repairer" in Reading. Mid morning, MB Newbury phoned to say that they had now requested MB Germany to approve two NEW front wings, rather than a repair. A little later, another phone call from MB Newbury to confirm that NEW wings had been authorised! This additional work would now require 5 days not 3.
New wings were ordered and delivered on 12th March; the work was completed and the car back in my hands by Friday 14th!! Overall only a period of 15 days from complaint to completion of work - "not-bad me-thinks"!
I have to commend my local dealership and in fact the Mobilo Guarantee in (almost) coming good! Such a shame about the bonnet, the car looks as good as new again otherwise.
I shall however persevere on the bonnet issue (and now the windscreen pillar) and update the Forum of any progress I may achieve in the future.
I note from the Forum that not all members have had such a positive and speedy outcome as I have done. Was it good luck; good dealer; or just a sunny day in Almagne? Maybe we shall never know!
