Model number does not match engine size?

I find it really annoying over recent years that Mercedes aswell as BMW put badge numbers on their cars that dont match its engine size like my 3 litre badged at E 280.
Why did they bring this in? I see at the other end of the spectrum they apologise for the size of some large petrol engines by making it seem smaller on the boot badge i presume to appeal to the parasitic, benefit scrounging, enviromental brigade.

copyright infringment? i understand a car ID with an "0" in the middle eg 305 405 etc is assigned to peugeot, call a new car focus and expect a call from ford's solictors etc, in previous employment I found myself lost in every major european city and one thing I observed hatchbacks are more popular in the UK and so are badges.

But then, you have the Seat/Triumph Toledo, Chevrolet/Vauxhall Cavalier and so on.

In the old days, power was denoted by engine size - so a 250 was slower than a 300 but faster than a 200. Nice and simple. These days, with ECUs, turbos, superchargers etc, you can have lower cc cars with more power than their 'bigger' brothers. Plus to save money manufacturers make one engine and put it out in varying power configurations. So technically you could call an E280 an E300 but then what do you call the identically cc'd E320 - an E300+ ?

I guess they could go down the VW route and have a dozen variations of the 1.9td - but then the owner of a 150hp 1.9td probably gets annoyed that his car is badged the same as the cheaper 110hp version.

Can't win really.

How easy is it to remove the badges and what method would you advise? Id prefer the ML500 to be badgeless.

Easier to do when its warm, or heat the figures with a hair drier or warm air gun, just put your finger nail behind them and they will come away, any glue residue can be wiped off with meths, lighter fuel.

Some folk use teeth floss, or fishing line, but I have always got them off with my finger nails

The VW method of using letters in red to indicate power, keeping the same engine size IMO was a nice way of doing it.

Thank-you very much for this, could be a good DIY thread. I did ask the dealer to do it, but they forgot.

I thought debadging was for the owners of lesser cars to pretend theirs is a range topper? In my case, I have no need to debadge either of my Mercs because they are both top of their ranges.....

I agree with u. Would really annoy me if clk200 was badged as a clk320 and so with other ranges of cars. It's like when the e36 m3 came out all 325i and 328i owners were just changing the wing mirrors and sticking an m3 badge on the back.

a recent Mercedes press release indicated that to get round this, they plan to limit their engine sizes down to the next possible badge number. This should come into effect late 2009

On the contrary, it was originally done to reduce the taxation on the vehicle by foxing the authorities it had a smaller engine. Thats what I'd like to think.

Nope! Why would you think that anyone - apart from MB enthusiats and yourself - are in the least bit interested? To Joe Public, it's a Merc, and therefore the Chariot of Satan, regardless of any badges.
