Ok if your looking down at the centre console between the seats where the gearbox is see 4 rocker switches set in a sqaure fromation with the gearlever in the middle between the front window and back window switches there is another switch , its square about 1cm x 1 cm and it pushes inward. now i have seen on other 190`s that they have one either side but mine has only one , on the LHS. there is a place set out for one on the RHS but it just has a black piece of plastic covering the apperature. does anyone know what the switch is for? is it something to do with being able to stop the rear passenger windows from being opened by kids? if so how come i only have one? Also the LHS rear window refuses to open. there is no sound of an electric motor so i dont belive its stuck. as the fuses work the diagonally opposite windows and they are all working i am wondering how if i can test the switch on the centre console or will i have to inevitably remove the interior trim of the rear LHS door and then test for power to the electric motor?

would be grateful for any anwers or ideas.

There's only ever been one switch, you only need one to switch off the rear windows (they still work from the front switches). the rear window motor will be jammed, usually because they are seldom used, try working the switch while looking at the interior lamp, does it dim when operating the switch, if yes the motor is stuck and may respond to a thump approximatley where the winder would be, while working the switch up/down (make sure it is switched on at the front).
If the lamp does'nt dim then something is open circuit, swap the switches over first to try (do you have one of the (bad idea) alarm systems that close the windows, if yes then this will be likely source.

hi Joe
i have done as you suggested but alas the light did nt dim. i have inspected the switch in the rear door. it came out of the inner door card really easily, i noticed that one of the little -plastic hooks to keep it in place has at some point been broken off. also the bottom leading edge of the door card/trim is comming away from the inner door. this is not surprising as it has had a knock at some point and the door has been repaired/replaced. anyway i think i will try to remove the door trim/card and have a look inside. maybe i can borrow a current meter from a mate of mine and see if current it getting to the switch in the door or to the motor. does this sound like the next course of action?

Looks like you will have to dig a bit deeper, take the trim off (needs fixed anyway) 1 screw at lock trim, 1 bolt at armrest handle under trim, panel lifts up (easier with window open.....), with ignition on (or one of the front doors open) and all switches in place (childlock off/rears working - pressed in) you should get +12v at both motor terminals, the switch swaps live for earth to each terminal when operated therfore powering motor up/down.
Disconnect the wires at the motor connector clipped to door (2 screws) and with some wire see if the motor works when connected to the battery.
Check the wires as they pass through the rubber grommet - prone to breaking, swap the rear switches over to try, are they genuine MB windows, not dealer fit??
Genuine ones will not have a blanking plug covering the hole where the mechanical winder was. reason I ask is there may be extra connectors/fuses with add ons.
With the sidelamps on do the rear switches light up (not easy to see in daylight, but is a quick way to check an earth is arriving at the switch ok, as the earth also passes through the child switch this is also shown to be ok.
There goes your weekend. keep me posted.

Sorry, forgot that bit, once the bolt is out pull the armrest handle out slightly and push the opening handle towards the front of the car, the link rod clips upwards and out.

Hi Joe
thanx very much for you advice Re: electric window winder. on close inspection we noticed a dip in the interior lamp when the window switch was pressed!. we took off the door card, the removal of the door relaease was a bit tricky! we sprayed the area where the wire winds up on the spool with WD40 and after a while it freed itself and now works fine, although the switch has had it and we swapped it over from the other side. so now ill see if i can get another from a breakers.

The door card is in quite bad shape. the bottom plastic hooks came off. Half the door card is damp from the bottom upwards, i have removed it from the car and am drying it slowly. was thinking about coating it with varnish to help protect it from more dampness and running a bead of silicon along the very bottom edge too. any idea where/why its getting moisture from. possibly door seal? or window seals? maybe water dripps down then, slowly absorbs into the backing? though we have had quite abit of rain over the weekend the bottom of the door was dry inside. the top LH corner of the door seal is slightly perished and has been repaired (badly) with some kind of sticky material tape?? any suggestions??

thanx again for your advice, im well chuffed that i have all my windows working now! even if i did miss the GP on TV this afternoon!
