I was putting in some helicoils on the ignition cover of my 320CE and noticed that the wires going to the 1-6 coil were exposed and probably touching each other. There seems to be a bit of corrosion there as well so it's probably been like that for a while. It looks like they had hardend due to the heat and just fell apart.

I'm not sure how to go about repairing this as the wire seems to buit into a moulded section and then this disappears into a loom above the inlet manifold.

I could just repair the two wires and cover them with heatshrink, but the same problem might be about to happen on the other two units.

Has anybody replaced this load of wires and what is involved?

Engine wiring harness

Hello mate, I had the same problem on my E320Coupe.

I was going to change the plugs. Then after taking off the cover I too noticed the insulation had cracked off leaving bare wires.

I tried to repair but to no avail as the more I pulled off the more the insulation broke off. Worst still, it was bad all the way up to the connecters.

I was really P off as £40k car should have been built better.

I rang around for 'Engine wirng harness' as was quoted £540 minus fitting from MB main dealers and @£500 from specialist and £150 labour.

I was advised that it was a common known problem and was not worth buying secondhand (£250) as most of the cars being broken would still be running the old loom with bio-degradable insulation.

In the end I bought an original uprated part direct from germany from a company called www.speed-autoteile.com for £415 inc.

I fiited it myself, @2hrs, just basically plug and play. I left the old engine wiring harness in the engine bay and put the new one on top and then did one connection at a time so I couldn't go wrong.

Money well worth spending if you intend to keep the car as mine now starts on the button, is smoother and more powerful.

Regards

I too thought I could patch my wires up but when I touched them, they just fell apart even more. I could probably do something with heat shrink and putting in small sections of new wire...but it wouldn't be pretty. I had a look at the harness and guessed I would have to replace the whole thing but it does look like something that I could do. I was thinking it was going to be expensive...but not that expensive!

I had a look through that site, but couldn't find the part...any idea where I should be looking?

wiring harness

Hello mate, I know what you mean about the website. Nightmare! The part does not actually show on their site so you will have to contact them with your part number for a quote.

I was well P off with the price too. But money well spent. At least I saved on purchase price and fitting I suppose.

I rang MB uk with my chassis number and asked them for my 'wiring harness' part number.

If you follow the wires back to the bulkhead area you will see a small white coloured tag with the part number on it.

My original part number was '124 440 5332.' MB uk told me that the new modified version with non-bio-degradeble insulation is '124 440 5332 05.' The part I bought actually had the old part number in which I queried before purchase. MB Germany, confirmed this was the only part number they listed but was confirmed upgraded. The new wiring harness is original MB part and you can tell it's modified as the quality of the insulation is much better.

I don't know if your car will have the same harness as mine so you better check first? I think the harness part number is dependant on the options fitted on the vehicle.

If you do a google search there's a chap who had the same problem as us and put pictures on the web giving advice.

All the best

Regards

I managed to get the number of my 'wires'...124.543.8133...it looks alot different from your set of numbers. I'll check with the dealer tomorrow, they were on holiday today, for some reason. I'll try and get a current price as well.

I lifted the battery out and can now see where all the wires go, it looks straight forward.

I still can't see how they justify the price though.

This dealer must hate me, I must have cost them and hours work chasing small parts, last week. I left with a bag of small bits and was only £10 worse of.

I got something back from the German people...124.543.8133 has been replaced by 124.440.8133 according to them. Price is 544 euros.

The dealer says that it has been replaced with 124.440.5332 for £480 ex VAT!

(I guess the Germans made a typo)

get on the web

before you sign any eurocheques, check out Mercedes-Benz Gebraucht-tiele center. It might have your bit for less. Or more.

Good luck

Wiring harness

Hello Turnipsock,

Strange about the part numbers?

If it helps? Mine is 94, E320 Coupe, air-con, 5 speed auto, cruise.

Might be wise to confirm again with MB dealer and the german company just in case they supply the wrong part?

Regards

This looks easy.

Aktually it's not a Jackson Pollock, but the wiring loom. It seems fairly straight forward to put it in, I have been working my way through it step by step and connecting up things that I haven't a shaggy what the do, I suppose it's one way to learn about ignition.

I should have it done tomorrow. I also have spent a lot of the day fitting a £5 bit of plastic that involved removing the front of the car!

Sorted. I'm back on the road again.

My back is showing signs of sunburn due to bending over a car all weekend.
Aktually it didn't take that long to do the loom, but I was messing about with the radiator cowling as well.

I gave it a quick run tonight but I'll be doing aa longer run tomorrow.
